fax/scanner question

I just got a new Epsom fax/scanner/copier.  It serves my purposes.  I'm setting it up now.

But it has phone line cord to hook in to the telephone line.  You don't "have to" send faxes by phone do you?  Can't you just scan a document and send it through the computer?

I heard it on the radio and the kid with his "whys" was the cutest thing ever.  Madison Avenue has some 'splainin' to do as to why I have no idea what product it was for!!
