In California timestamping can only be used at certain times (there was a problem with it being used to pad all transcripts.) One of those times is for videotaped depos, which makes sense for syncing, etc.

I have had attorneys specifically ask me to use the timestamping with video, but I'm wondering if people always timestamp videotaped depos or only timestamp when requested or ask at the time of each videotaped depo.

If a job is going to be synched to the video, the videographer will require a non-timestamped copy of the ASCII. The reporter's timestamps will completely screw with the synching software. If you are sending a timestamped copy of the ASCII on a video job, I would also recommend sending a version without stamps.
As a videographer I think that time stamps are a huge benefit. If there is a need for editing, then locating the cuts is a snap with the time stamps. Also, being dead nuts on with the time isn’t all that imperative because if you are 30 seconds off at the beginning you’ll be 30 seconds off throughout and you and you can adjust. I think that some software programs let you add time stamps in after the deposition which is one less thing for the reporter to deal with at the start of a deposition.
I ALWAYS forget to synch with the VAOFR and the VAOFRS never ever ever ask. And we're often off by a minute or two. Even if we start at the same time (coincidentally), by the second or third break we're off.

Here's how to fix the starting time or a time during the dep to synch with videographer:
1. view/ show time stamps and click elapsed time
2. in file, go to first timestamp and press SHIFT f4; SET TIME
3. manually change the time to, say, 083000 if the dep starts at 8:30. don't worry about a.m. and p.m.
4. during the dep when you're at a break and VAOFR says it's 9:16 but you have 9:17, go to the first 9:17 timestamp and switch it to 091600.
4. switch to elapsed time in ASCII SETTINGS!!!! (very important!!)
