Attorneys who mark their own exhibits

I am not accustomed to attorneys marking their own exhibits. It doesn't seem to be the norm in Washington state. However, when I work with out-of-state attorneys, they all ask for exhbit stickers and mark their own exhibits as they go. This tends to throw me off.
On Friday, I did a deposition where I didn't realize we marked the same number twice. As hard as I tried to keep up with noting which number we were on, I missed one and when the attorney asked what number we were on, I gave the wrong number. Now I have two Exhibit 8s in my transcript. I feel silly. I just don't know what is the best way to regain control over marking my own exhibits. I thought I had it under control when I announced that I prefer to mark my own exhibits in this dep. When it came time, the attorney was reaching over and grabbing my stickers or snapping her fingers for me to give her the stickers (while she was still talking and the witness was answering). I would really appreciate any input.

Everybody seems to using stickers, but when I started reporting I believe it was the custom in LA to use a rubber stamp. So I've been using one ever since. It's got a blank for exh. number, date, wit name, no. of total pages, and my name.

I use a red stamp pad, so at the end of the day I can easily find which are the docs I need to grab. And attys seem to keep their hands off it. I like them to pause and allow me to mark it, because sometimes that's the only chance I have to take a breath, and it gives me a chance to write down the number on my worksheet and keep track.

I have had this problem also. So at a break I will number the stickers in advance so that the attorney can keep track better. And if the attorney flies through the stickers, I'll mark another set. (just the numbers to get by.)

I would just use Exhibit No. 8 and Exhibit No. 8A. I've had to do that when attorneys mark the exhibits, and it does throw us off. Hope this helps.

that does help. I was trying to squish it as "8 duplicate" but then the index was all screwy. "A" is so much shorter! Thanks.
