For those Reporters who are part-time Officials, those who "job-share," how are your "off" days handled:  a) Are you able to freelance, to live your life as you please, or, b) Do your court administrators require you to be "on call," to NOT be compensated for your "off" days, and to drop everything you're doing at a moment's notice on your "off" days, in order to be available to read back to a jury testimony you had reported on your "working" days?

Would I be correct in presuming that "B" would preclude any freelancing, since you would never know when the jury would need you to read back, so you could not make any appointments to freelance?  How could you possibly freelance, when reporter must be available to answer a telephone and immediately read back your working-days testimony on your NON-compensated "off" days?

In my county it's one full-time week on, one full week off. You share the job with another person.  They take depos on their off week. I don't work in court, but that's what I was told.

Thank you.

And wondering how jury readbacks are handled when they occur on a non-working-day?

Why would a part-time official in his/her right mind agree to be on call on the off days?  Don't TPTB know that off days can be used for a multitude of things such as working deps, going to doc appointments, going to theater,  etc?  If the part-timer is needed for any reason on a day for which they're off and not getting paid, I say ASK FOR ASSISTANCE AT YOUR PERIL!!  Just because they ask, doesn't mean they'll get.   The only response they'd get from me is RUFKM???!!!!

Marge,

Please translate the first steno outline?  It didn't take me long to figure out the last one!  LOL

TPTB = the powers that be!!!

Damn, now it makes perfect sense!

Thanks!
