My computer is a Dell Dimensions E310.
I bought this Stenoram II from JM Steno months ago. I just got set up with DigitalCat (Student).

I know the Stenoram works, but I connect it to the computer, and I didn't even get a Dedect New Hardware message. I can't check the PORTS because they don't show up as Port I or Port X. From what I have seen, the Stenoram hardware is not installed.

Anyone have any ideas so I can confirm that the Stenoram actually is connecting to the computer (It does do the 1-8 thing), and since I bought it from a court reporting supply place, I think it does work.

How do I check the computer for the ports?

Glad you got it working. Make sure to use the same USB port every time. If you switch to a different port, it will most likely take a new Com port # (such as Com5). You can always check the device manager to verify this.

Congrats on getting your realtime to work!

My instructors always told me that they generally didn't like it when students used their laptops in class. Seems they were worried that I would spend too much time looking at the screen and not concentrating on what I was writing!

I sat my instructor in front of my writer, fired up the Speed Teacher, set the number of words to five and the speed to 200, and let her drill for a while.

When she was done, I asked her if she had looked at the realtime display? She said she didn't have time!

So, no one complained about me hooking up in class after that.

Since you're all hooked up, you might as well download the Speed Teacher ... and if you want to make your own drills, you can use the Drill Machine (free). All you have to do is remember to hit the enter/return key at the end of each sentence. This keeps the Drill Machine from skipping over the first word of the next sentence.

You might also want to download Ace Reader Pro when you get a chance ($50).

Ace Reader Pro is sort of a combination of the Speed Teacher and the Drill Machine. While it doesn't have the Speed Teacher's built-in drills, it can open the drills you make/download for the Drill Machine ... and it has the added benefit of having a greater range of speeds (400 wpm in demo mode!).

Have fun!
