I bought a Stenoram II off of e-bay. I haven't worked as a reporter in twenty years (CAT was just coming out as I was leaving). Can anyone provide me with a copy of a user's manual? I sure would appreciate it.

The machine charges. At least the light comes on. That's all I know about the machine.

Hi Mary Jo,

Congratulations on re-entry back into the field. Stenoram II is the same machine I have used for years. I don't have a user's manual, but may be able to answer any questions you have. That's a good sign it charges!
I'm not sure where you're located, but there's a great guy (Victor) in Burlingame, CA who works on/repairs steno machines, etc., and he may have access to a user's manual or know where you can pick one up. His business is called Personal Touch. He's great.

Lynn, thank's so much for responding. I found where I can get a user manual.

The machine charges, but if it is supposed to turn on with one of the buttons in the back, then it doesn't. I took it out of the case and looked at it.

My best guess is the battery needs to be replaced. How often do you replace your battery?

There are some buttons on the back, below STROKE SPACING. ON and OFF. Is the ON supposed to turn the machine on?

I have the connector thing. The 25 prongs on the one side, most of those are broken off. I guess this is for sending information to the software.

I am not in a financial position to borrow any money for a real nice machine. You said you have used yours for years. To be truthful, the inside of this machine is what "I was raised on" (manual from '8o's) - and I really don't want a super spiffy one. Really all I need is a machine that "does it". Even in today's market, what I have seen of court reporter transcripts (I have been a legal assistant for 20 years), does this machine do everything a basic reporter needs? I may buy another one from Acculaw.

If you can give me with quicky answers, I will be ever to grateful.

Hi Mary Jo,

The "on" button turns it on, then it the numbers should start counting up to "08" in the little window on the front by the keys. To turn it off, you have to hold in the "off" button on the back while depressing the bank of four keys on the far right of the keyboard. Hold them down at the same time you're holding in the off key. Your number window on the front of the machine should then be blank.
"Stroke spacing" just allows you to space out your writing on your paper so you won't stack, or if it's a slow depo, you can space it closer together to conserve your paper. The pronged part is what you plug into your computer to download your depositions.
Yes, this is "antiquated" compared to all the newer spiffy machines, but I LOVE mine and have been able to do whatever I need, as far as court reporting goes. I have it serviced once a year or so and Victor checks to see if the battery needs to be replaced. One good thing, though, is if the battery does go out while you're in a depo, you always have the manual mode as a backup. I'm not so sure all the newer slick machines have that capability.
