Hi, my name is Laura.  I am a former court reporter available for proofreading work.  I offer reasonable rates and fast turnaround time.  If you would like my help, please contact me at scottlaura39@yahoo.com.

Some general observations regarding several posts on this forum:

1) If people receive "duplicate" e-mails regarding posts from CSRNation, it might be a result of the same post being posted in multiple forums.  I didn't even realize (or forgot) there was this specific forum for placing proofreading "ads" which often end up on being posted on the Proofreaders forum.  I believe the Proofreaders forum was probably designed for general proofreading discussion and this "ad" forum is more for solicitation, but unlike Eclipse Forums, the folks who run CSRNation don't appear to be strict about where the information gets posted, which is a good thing.

2) Regarding clients who might be slow pay or no pay; I have a policy not to exceed a $200 balance for new clients prior to my invoicing them (which is generally weekly anyway).  This has worked well for me.  When I recently made an exception with a client I had no history with who wanted to pay twice each month, she ran up an $800 bill.  Sure enough, it took a long time to get paid and I wasn't a happy camper.  Stick to policies and these types of problems can usually be avoided.  When  reporters said they were not happy with my work and claimed that I made lots of mistakes or whatever (and hundreds of dollars is not at stake), I just tell them "no charge, have a nice day."  Isn't worth the negative energy to deal with that type of thing.  If it is involving a considerable amount of money, I simply offer a discount, take the loss and move on.

3) Another good policy (and this goes for reporters, scopists, proofreaders, transcribers, etc.) is to conduct 20-minute telephone interviews (or an email interview) to find out about compatibility BEFORE entering into a relationship.  This will narrow down the playing field for BOTH parties.  No sense to "get in bed" with folks that aren't going to be a good business marriage.  Again, when I slack off and don't take that extra steps, both of us often end up to be very unhappy.

Any reporter needing proofreading services can contact me via phone (866-925-8020) or via my website: http://WeNeverSleep.com

I also am happy to hear from other proofreaders who need help collecting money owed to them (or any other aspect of the proofreading business).  Sometimes it is as simple as contacting the agencies the reporter does work for (or the court administrator if the reporter is an official) and you'd be amazed how quickly an outstanding invoice is taken care of!  In ten years, I only had to result to that method once or twice, so I have been very fortunate in that regard.  Threatening collection activity can also do the job (which I have had to do about five times in ten years), but did receive prompt payment after that.  Be professional; we don't want to alienate folks, especially during the Great Recession.

Glad to help in any way I can.

Thanks, Janet. That makes sense.

That normally happens if someone edits their ad and posts it again.  I'm assuming that's what happened with the ad Chris placed.

I am also getting duplicate e-mails.

I wonder if something is wrong with CSR website - I've gotten the same e-notice three times now.

Hello, everyone!  I have been proofreading exclusively for court reporters for 20 years now and have many recommendations from CSRs on this site under the "Scopists & Proofers Recommended by Reporters" discussion.  (See link:  http://csrnation.ning.com/forum/topics/scopists-proofers-recommended.)  Due to the summer slowdown I would like to add a couple of "heavy hitters" or several part-timers to my client roster.  My corrections process is very user friendly; you receive a PDF back from me with your corrections integrated into the transcript so you can see them in context without those dreaded errata sheets!  Corrections are searchable in the PDF and set off in red.  I offer competitive rates, reliability, flexibility, and same-day/overnight turnaround (with little notice in most cases).  I have a couple of different billing options for your convenience including prepayment at a discount.  Payment is handled exclusively through PayPal.  You may message me on this site for more information or contact me directly at chrisrenegar@gmail.com and I will promptly send out my bio, introductory information, and a rate sheet with a sample transcript attached.  I'd love to hear from you!  :-)

I am an experienced proofreader looking for reporters who could use my services.  I am new to the court reporting world, but I have been proofreading for years and I am excited to get started. I am willing to proof 15 pages and supply an errata sheet for free so you can see the quality of my work. I can work with PDF files and Word documents. To view my rates and turnaround times please email me at aak dot proofer at gmail dot com. I’m really excited to start working with you.

Proofreaders and reporters alike, beware of a reporter D.B. from Topeka, KS.  You will never be paid whether you're a reporter asked to take a job for her or to proofread for her.  Steer clear.

I am an Austin TX proofreader and have been proofing for an Austin reporter who is so bad about paying me that at one point she owed me over $1,500! She never confirms my requests for confirmation of receipt of my invoices. I have to contact her several times before she acknowledges receipt. I usually get these harsh emails back in response to my invoice pointing out things I missed. When I try to go over them with her she never responds. She sends files very late and gives me a short turn around, which I always make, but she claims she takes responsibility for the work being late, insinuating it's my fault!
I now have several reporters who are SO awesome that I can drop this one after I get the rest of my money. None of my other reporters have ever complained or not paid me and I always ask for constructive criticism.
Be wary!

It's very unusual. I've been proofreading for 18 years and I've only been stiffed once. I doubt that there are many in the service industry who can say the same thing. Most CSRs are timely and very conscientious.

Comment by Delicia Struss on July 6, 2012 at 8:40

You're welcome, Tracy. Considering how much we reporters hate it when attorneys stiff us, it's unbelievable that a reporter would act this way.

Warning to proofreaders.  My proofreader has done work for S.S. from Austin, TX, who has not paid in over a month and refuses to respond to e-mails now.  If my proofreader doesn't get payment soon, I just may come back and tell her full name.

I'm in need of a proofreader asap!  My regular proofreader will not be available for a week.  So I need someone who can proofread my jobs while she's gone.  Please e-mail me with your rates and turnaround time!  I have one job that I need back by Monday afternoon.  Please let me know asap!  My e-mail address is halo172516@yahoo.com

Thanks!

Hi Laura-

Please email me your email address because when I try to email you from the one you sent my sbcglobal, it says do-not-reply, and the link it says to click on to respond doesn't work. Will send the information you asked for.

This may be an unusual request. I have been a California CSR for over 25 years. Most of my experience has been in freelance depositions. I have a strong medical and technical background. I have been home for a number of years raising children. Now that they are grown, I want to get back into the reporting/scoping field. I have purchased the full version Case Cat, Version 13. Scoping and proofreading is where I would like to start, as I haven't been reporting for a while. I would love to ultimately stay home and work part-time, maybe full time. I do have Drop Box, and know how to transfer files. I would like to intern as a proofreader, and then progress to scoping with full audio. I do have a reporting resume I could email to you. Is there anyone out there that would consider taking on an intern? If so, please give me a call: Reyes Hunter, CSR 6576, 530-339-5023 or email me rhuntercsr@gmail.com.

Want to give a heads-up there's a new reporter that works for a reporting firm in Lake City, Florida that may be looking for a proofreader, and she does....not.....pay. When I realized what was going on, I abruptly quit proofing for her, so she may be looking for another proofreader. I don't want anyone else to get caught in this trap.

Former legal secretary for decades just semi-retired, woo hoo! I've been doing audio transcription from home and a bit of proofreading and scoping for a court reporter friend since 2011. I would love to speak with or work with someone who is willing to put a transcript into Microsoft Word for a proofreading assignment, as I do not have CAT equipment. I work with Dropbox, Infinity foot pedal and Start Stop. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
