I got a Stenoram III off e-bay for $40.00.  I put in a battery - and it works.  I am going to leave it up for daily practice.

Anyone know how to shimmy it so the strokes are shorter?

To shim a machine is something that should be done by a professional - that's my opinion.  I believe the Cheap 'n Sleazy website has instructions on how to shim a writer, however.

M.A.

I did it!!!  Those early days with the manual writer have paid off.

Open up the cover, where your white plastic wheel is that controls spacing (the one in front).  Unclip the metal clip.  Use a screw driver to loosen the two screws surrounding the white wheel.  Then slowly turn the wheel to adjust the spacing (not too much).  Tighten the screws and replace the metal clip.

P.S.:  If your writer is expensive, don't do it.

Denise, if you don't want to buy another writer, I would suggest you get a Stenoram II.  JM Steno is about $400.00.

You can leave the big bulky Stenoram III Ultra set up for practice.  The Stenoram II does not have the wasted space for the disk drive, does 200 pages, and you can connect it to a little laptop (I have a Dell 410).  Mostly, it looks sleek and modern.  I painted mine periwinkle (Walmart).

Denise, reminder, if you want to make those strokes really short:

Take off the metal clip

Use a flat screwdriver to loosen the two tight screws.

THEN move the wheel and check your stroke spacing.

Retighten the screws and put back the metal clip.

You can make that stroking really shallow, more than what you are getting right now.
