I've been getting into memoirs lately (something I used to never, ever read), mostly because a few of my favorite celebs recently put out books -- Lauren Graham and Mara Wilson. (They're just as funny in writing as they are on screen, by the way.) I also read, "Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress" in high school, which was surprisingly entertaining.

Anyone have recommendations for witty, insightful, essay-style memoirs?

I've never read a memoir. I read a lot of young adult fantasy. I read my first fantasy book about ten years ago, and I read mostly fantasy now. Have you ever read any fantasy?

A good amount, I'd say, though I'm super behind the times on it. I'm a huge fan of YA lit, though. I don't think I'll ever grow out of it. :) What's your favorite fantasy book/series?

Wow.  There are so many great ones.  I'm reading a Court of Wings and Ruin.  It is the third book in the trilogy.  I heard they are going to make a movie about these books.  I really like Sarah J. Maas.  I have read every book she has written.  She has written this trilogy, and then she has another series that she started writing when she was 16 years old.  I heard they are going to make a television show on that series.  She came out of nowhere, and now, after two series, she is one of the top authors for YA fantasy.  There are so many other books that are amazing.  I love the creativity and the break from reality after reading transcripts all the time...lol

I bet! Escapism is real hahaa. I'll look that one up. :)

If you like fantasy, I would recommend it.  I'm on Goodreads, and all three books have great ratings.

I have those on my Kindle, but I think I need physical copies. I can't get through it even though I enjoy them. Sometimes I have to be able to really hold it though haha.

I enjoy Jenny Lawson's memoirs -- they're definitely funny, and sometimes dark. I don't think I've ever laughed out loud so much while reading a book.

Her first book was Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir), and her second was Furiously Happy: A Funny Book about Horrible Things

If you'd like to get and idea of the tone of her writing, you might want to visit her blog and website at http://thebloggess.com/.

I also really enjoyed Glennon Doyle Melton's Love Warrior. It's less on the funny side, but I appreciate how she writes and reflects on her experiences.

Thanks for this suggestion! Sounds like it's similar to Susan Jane Gilman's "Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress," which I read in high school and enjoyed. I'll check her out. Thanks! :)

If you enjoy memoirs on the humorous side, I recommend "Funny in Farsi" by Firoozeh Dumas. It is about her family immigrating to the U.S. and adjusting to the culture here. I shared it with three or four people at work; they also loved it.

Oooh, that sounds interesting. I would love something with an interesting story/perspective like that. I'll make a note. Thanks!

I've never been into memoirs.  There's really no celebrity that is important enough to read about them or their life, but this one does sound interesting...  I'm with you.  That does sound interesting.  I might just read my first memoir.  Thanks!
