I had an all day job and had to shut down my computer at the lunch break -- I've never had to do this. When returning back from lunch I had to start a new file and I labelled it "noon," because I had no time to think. My question is: Is there a way to combine these two files without cutting & pasting? or is cut & paste the best way to do this?

Jena,

That's a good question. But I need to answer your question with another question.

Were you using audiosync? Do you want to use your audiosync for editing?

If your combine the two files before editing you will lose your audio. Please read your help menu regarding this issue.

So I'd suggest you completely edit your files in two parts then merge them. There are probably several ways to merge them. I would go to the end of the morning document and invoke the Include command Ctrl F9 of the afternoon document. It's simple.

I'm hoping other members will suggest their way of merging too. Good luck,

Bubbie Karen
Yes, I agree with the method Karen just provided. That's the way I have also done it. Also, you may already know this, but be careful not to rename the file until you're done with the audio. CaseCat looks to the original named file to synch. Changing the name will cause a problem with the audio. If someone knows a work-around for this, they may be able to respond.
one of two ways, finish editing both files then go to the end of 1st file and merge it with second file. control m should do this. OR just to shorrtcut, make a copy of noon job, name it all noon1, then go ahead and merge the files, then, if there's a problem w/audio, then it should bring up a window of all audios when you go to hear the one you're looking for (because you changed the names) and you can select from there which audio you want. i hope this was helpful and not confusing. but when you rename a file you should go in edit to shift f9 it should show you audios avail, and chose the one you named. good luck it should be easy
There is no way to merge the audio files. I routinely open a new file in the afternoon for every job. This has been a practice of mine for years. There are a few reasons why I do it but that's not important.

I edit the morning and afternoon sessions individually and then use the F9 inlcude function, as Karen suggested above, to merge the text files when completely done editing.

You are able to rename your file and still get to the audio by browsing and selecting the "original" name filed for the audio, which CAtalyst should bring up, and CATalyst will sync it up. I always try to make up a backup of the file BEFORE I rename it, just in case : )

Hope this helps!

Paula
I am assuming it was realtime. Play with the "append" feature when naming the job the same name in the afternoon. That should attach you to the end of the morning's transcript and continue realtiming.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes.
Oh, boy, guys! NEVER EVER use the merge function. It's a problematic function, and as Jeremy at tech put it, shouldn't even be an option.

When this happens, you can include your noon session, or whatever session, into your current file and your audio and everything remains the same. So when you get to the end of your first part, hit F9 and bring in your second part. Nothing is messed up, no audio lost, nothing.

Also when you rename a file, it does not mess up audio, you simply just have to click on the renamed audio file and, voila, everything is fine. :)

I highly urge everyone to not merge anything. It's disastrous and can potentially create a huge problem as once something is merged, there's absolutely no going back.
Christi,

I had no clue that you could invoke the INCLUDE command and not lose your audio from the included file, or even rename the file and not lose the audio.

Once I'm settled from my trip to LA back here home in Worcester, I'm going to try to do exactly what you've suggested. But I'm thanking you in advance if it works.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH,

Bubbie Karen
Apparently, it doesn't work now. I should have tried it before making myself look the fool. LOL However, I know there's a way to put the files together without messing up the audio. And it doesn't include merging. Let me tinker a bit after lunch and get it figured out. I apologize for giving the wrong info.
