Occasional SoCal CSR Outings:

*************************************************************************************
To receive invitations to the Occasional SoCal CSR Outings, email me at marlavous@hotmail.com. The several we've had so far have been a lot of fun. Different people come all the time. Networking is really worthwhile in our stressful job. It's amazing how many supportive, helpful people we have in our profession. That's why getting out and meeting other reporters is so important. All are welcome.

Yeah. You don't. I guess as a Federal reporter you can work in every state. You do have to have your RPR or something, I'm not sure of the details.

Thanks, Marla & Vesna!

I'll email Connie now... :)

You can always call or email the California Court Reporters Board.

Better to go to the source than rely on conjecture or speculation, right? Connie is really nice and very helpful.

I was gonna say I remember something about bankruptcy court w/o a CSR?
Comment by Christine (Steno Nerd) on December 6, 2009 at 18:18
Really, Kyung??? Do tell!!!

Thanks! :)
Comment by Kyung on December 6, 2009 at 18:14
You know, you don't technically have to have a license to work in the Federal Court system either.
Comment by Christine (Steno Nerd) on December 6, 2009 at 17:57
Thanks so much, Vesna & Marla!

Yeah, if anyone knows what kind of work you can do in California without a CSR license, I'd appreciate it if you can share the knowledge! :)

Another (similar) question: Are you able to be a CART/broadcast captioner without a CSR in California? You just need to actually be able to write at those high speeds pretty accurately? Right?

Thanks again! :)

Pretty sure you can do public hearings.
Comment by Marla Sharp on December 6, 2009 at 17:45
Yes, you have to have a current California CSR license to report in California. That's not a stupid question at all. All states seem to be different. I'm from Ohio where you don't need a license, nor was one available to be taken when I lived there. And I recently found out you can work in Oregon without a license, though a license is available.

've heard that there are some hearings you can report here in California without a license. For the life of me, I can't remember what kinds of hearings those are. Hopefully someone will post that answer on here.
