Eclipse Version 5 Users

This group is for Version 5 users to share what aspects of Version 5 they are using and why.....as well as requests for help as problems arise using Version 5.

I just downloaded Version 5 (a year after it came out), and I feel like I'm learning Eclipse all over again.

Would greatly appreciate input from other Version 5 users.

My Eclipse key is never has a "direct connection" to my computer, and I never have a problem.  I always have my "half-octopus" attached and have never had a problem.  At my minimum hook-up job (only four devices:  Eclipse key, Verizon aircard, writer hookup, mouse), I ALWAYS have the three attached to the Staples hub because I don't want to mess with it connecting to different hubs and searching for drivers.  My key is always in the same hub off-shoot, my aircard is always in the same hub off-shoot, and my writer is always in the same hub off-shoot (I have everything color-coded with nail polish colors!)

Now, my mic is a direct connect to the mic input jack.  My output mic jack I have my Boosteroo and then my earbuds attached to the Boosteroo (I always listen with at least one earbud).   I've tried the USB mics and was not satisfied (after spending several hundred dollars at least twice).

When I do have a realtime hookup job (I certainly do not hook up as much as you do), my Stenocast gets attached via the other half-octopus, and I've never had an issue.

I honestly have not downloaded V5 because I am afraid I have some bugs in my current laptop that I dont' want to disrupt my jobs until I clean it up and transfer all my files to a new laptop, hence my purpose earlier today to contact the Eclipse Forum for input on what laptop to purchase.  I am a bit nervous that I may have glitches and want to know if you feel I should just get support to help me upload it and get going on it and work out any glitches as they arise?  Do you think that is what I should do?  Any issues I should be concerned about or direction anyone thinks I should go in?  Thanks so much!

How odd that Judy has no problem and you do.  My Eclipse key is plugged into a Dynex hub that provides 7 USB ports.  Hasn't given me a problem.  Hope you find a solution, Kelli.  Gosh, that sounds frustrating...joyce

Thank you, Wynne, Joyce, Judy, everyone... what great info/feedback.  I am so happy to be reading your questions/answers.  I really appreciate this site.  I'll be listening and reading more and more... I am sure my questions will be forthcoming; and I feel confident I will have great feedback.  At this point, I am just looking for more work.  I have six years of Eclipse under my belt and 18 years of Premier Power.  I can't wait until the next conference to see everyone!  Thanks again!  Looking forward to seeing how everything works for you, Kelli!  Good luck!  Suzn

The problem is my microphone is a USB microphone and absolutely has to work with the USB that is part of your laptop.  My Stenocast has to use a USB output from my computer.  I know because when I tried the hub it locked up my computer.  My Eclipse key has to use a direct connection to the computer.  I'm out of USBs.  I told advantage they need to give a code like Stenograph does now that the new computers have less USBs we can't waste it on the key.  They tell me they're "working on it."  We'll see.  I only go direct because I've been told to by the manufacturers, except for Stenocast, which I found out I "have to go direct."  I have the Belkin hub, which gave me all this problem.

Kelli,

I have only two USB ports on my computer.  I use a 4-port USB hub from Staples.  It looks like an octopus, with four small cables (hubs) coming from the middle section.  I have my Eclipse key, my Verizon aircard, and my realtime cable hooking up my writer to my computer on that puppy and never have a problem.

I use a second 4-port hub when I hookup for realtime jobs.

Hmm, would a multi-USB dongle work for you?  Like you, I only have a few USB ports on my laptop.  I purchased a 4-USB port plug-in.  It used one of the USB ports but gave me three more.  For using DB, if you get something like this, might be best to use one of the "hard" ports instead of one of the add-ons.  Not sure of this.

Good luck, Kelli.  Let us know how it goes.

I'm trying out my very first DropBox/V5 job tomorrow.  I have a 2-hour or so daily and I thought it would be perfect to try it out.  I will let you know how it goes.  I'm not sure I can get online at this office, though.  I really need to invest in Internet through Verizon for my laptop, but I can't spare another USB port.  Not sure of the alternatives.

thanks for you comment, Joyce....that's interesting!

I have found Dropbox very easy to use.  There's no need to go to a website to upload or download files.  You have a share folder right on your computer and simply copy/paste your files into that folder.  The sharers of your folder receive notice that a file has arrived.  Yes, the Internet is used, but it is behind the scenes.

V5 has a feature within Division Interval that sends files and audio to DB (or the cloud of your choice) and automatically updates the audio each time an interval file goes in.  While I do not scope in DB (I copy the files to my job folder within Eclipse), my audio is pathed to DB.  AL, an awesome Texas reporter, and I worked long and hard to debug DI.  We learned that the less interaction you have with the Internet while you're working in DI, the better.  Tech support was helpful, but the different people who gave us advice were not all on the same page.

Using Division Interval gives you a leg up on expedited jobs.  Your scopist can get started quickly, no waiting until a break to end a file and send the text and audio.  It's helpful to have a good word list beforehand so that the scopist can make globals and there's not too much retracing of steps at the end.

You do need a strong, stable Internet connection.  Aircards are getting better and better.  Wireless connections, if you know whose you're using, should be secure.

Most of the V5 bugs seem to be in the past.  It was rough going in the beginning.  I hope new versions get a more thorough shakedown before being offered to those of us who like to work with development versions.

Ciao...Joyce Davis
