I am Black, grew up in Harlem, and didn't realize it until I was 17 because my mom and dad raised me "color-blind." Long story short - I acted off-Broadway as a teenager and decided to audition for Jesus Christ Superstar - New York Broadway. I was the last one standing and the director told me I could be in the chorus!!! I couldn't figure out what the matter was - 5'4", I could wear a wig -- "What up?" I got home - my dad said, "you are not the right color." Dumbfounded, I said, "What -- I'm ------BLACK?????!!!!????" There you go!!!!! So when I speak Chinese in Chinatown, San Francisco, They bring the whole Chinese brood from the back and asks me to repeat everything I said.!!! It's a hoot, but I love language. I guess that's why I love Court reporting - new language!
