Time Stamps when using a Stentura 8000LX with no computer

I have a video assignment day after tomorrow, and I just read all the fine print instructions.  Apparently, I have to do time stamps.  I have never done this before.  I use a Stentura 8000LX, do not bring a computer to jobs, and have version 11.2.  I do have support, but don't know if I'll be able to contact anyone at Procat before the job because I'll be in jobs and on the road.  So I'm hoping someone can help me here.First off, am I going to be able to do time stamps, since I don't bring a…See More

Hi, I'm a reporter in Mesquite, TX.  I need a scopist occasionally.  And right now I need a scopist.    Would you forward me an email to the person you know that wants to scope.

I wrote on a 8000LX for many years, then got the Impression because, quite frankly, the 8000 was getting way too heavy to haul around.

The Impression, by comparison, is a dream.  It is light and writes beautifully...once you get it calibrated to your touch.  I got mine in January, I think, of '15 but had to spend some time on the phone with tech support.  After the initial setup, I had to tweak things a couple more times on the phone.  And this all has to do with YOUR stroke, i.e. the depth, hardness/lightness of your stroke.  They then requested I send the machine back to them.  They did whatever they do, and it came back and has been wonderful since then until about a couple months ago it came out of adjustment.   Now, whether that's from hauling it around, over curbs, etc., your guess is as good as mine.  I believe that my 8000 LX, and whatever I had before that, you always used to have to adjust your keys.  I'm not particularly mechanically inclined so I always had my machines serviced regularly.  One of the Stenograph-trained repair guys was in the San Francisco Financial District so it was easy enough to swing by there if there was an issue of some sort.  He retired, the machine got old, and that was that, so it was time to find something paperless.  That, combined with my wanting something lighter, was the main reason for exploring options.

I was going to buy a new/used Diamante from a reporter who basically bought it, used it a short period of time, then got out of reporting, but she sold it locally out from under me rather than having to pack it up and ship it.  ProCat was offering a "deal," so I went with it.   As long as they are getting your money out of you, they are friendly and helpful.   But they're not any different than any of the other equipment providers.

Court reporters are a limited market and since the number of reporters are dwindling, all these companies are going to hold your feet to the fire to get what they can because they are techies, and that's what techies do.  I've recently had an experience where I had an adjustment session, an issue that wasn't there when I initially requested the service call was created, and the company contact has been unresponsive.  They are usually very quick to send you an evaluation after your session but that never showed up either.  The fix may be as simple as maybe checking a box or something for all I know, but I'm irritated with them right now and will most likely ship the machine down to them again during the holidays when work is slow.  I've figured out a way to live with the issue until I can let it go for a few days.

One thing I discovered about ProCat is that your service contract does not transfer if you sell the machine.   So if you purchase a used machine, that should be accounted for in the price.  Service contract is, ballpark, $300/year and more if you want to pay for them to send you a loaner.  Personally, I'd take the week off and just not worry about it but that's just me.

I guess my message is pick your poison as far as the company, but as far as the writer goes, I think with all of them they need adjustment from time to time.   Look at where the repair facilities are and what hoops you have to jump through to maintain it and the service contracts and warranties.  Knowing that I was only going to use the machine a short time before I retired from reporting, my hope was that I'd be able to recoup a good portion of my money when I sold it.  We'll see how that turns out.  Despite my current "issue," I'm not going to throw the writer under the bus.  And I think I felt the same way about the keyboard as someone else had mentioned, but I measured it with a tape measure and it was exactly the same size as my 8000LX.   So I

Hi, all.  I have finally found some good reliable scopists, so I am hoping to increase my workload.  I live in a suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana, and I'd love to get with a national firm that makes assignments to local reporters when their clients have a need in my geographic area.  For all of my career, I have worked for one firm, for many years at a time, but I have time now to do overflow for more firms.  I don't have my own clients, so I think a national firm might be the best fit for me, since the local firms only want to hire reporters with their own clients so they can help them build their business.  Thank you for any suggestions!
