Why are things so bad in California for court reporters? What is going on out there?
I'm not getting any work either, Crystal. I've only been a reporter for about four years, but so far it's just gone from bad to worse. Actually, I'm on the verge of quitting. Hope it turns around for all of us sooner than later. I don't know how much longer I can hold out.
To make matters worse, my husband was in a serious car accident and broke his clavicle and now he needs surgery we can't afford. Figures it would happen right when I stopped getting any work at all.
So no matter how bad things might be, if you're not trying to find one surgeon willing to treat a patient that has to make payments, if you're not on the verge of losing your apartment and moving in with your in-laws, you've still got some things going for you.
Best of luck to everyone.
Jeanese would be a great one to connect with. She is a wonderful person and an excellent court reporter.
Don't call!! Print your resume on fine, textured paper. You need to have a a really nice resume. I recommend starting from scratch. It takes time. These firms may be getting saturated with emails and faxes. Look in the yellow pages or the internet for depo firms in your area, and from there do some recon in person. Dress nice. Get personal with these people - they'll remember your face. Good luck!
I would go out and start getting some business. Market yourself to attorneys that you got along with and see if you can get some stuff cooking. It only takes a couple.
Also, if you can team up with a busy reporter and get her to refer jobs to you when she is double booked and you do the same with her. Hang in there.
