I'm a former SC Court Reporter and News Assignment Editor who has been a stay-at-home mom and wants to start scoping, transcribing or proofing. How do I get into it and where do I start and what equipment do I need????? Thanks for any advice! Valerie Ravencraft, Oklahoma

Hi Valerie,

You might want to consider the scoping intern program which is offered through Scoping Made Affordable.
You can read more about it at www.joyfulscoping.com.

Scoping Made Affordable has different levels that accommodate where individuals are according to their previous background.
I have several interns and other students that have progressed to the intern part of the training program that are enjoying the weekly conference calls and are just about ready to sail.

Feel free to contact me at drscoping@gmail.com if I can address any other specific questions you may have.

Sincerely,
Ms. Devon Roberts

With your background you'll probably just need some brush up and some gap filling. At Internet Scoping School we offer various course plans in order to meet your specific needs. You can also purchase individual units of training according to your needs so you aren't paying for any training you don't need. We offer the option of testing out of certain modules so you can gauge what your current skill level is and whether you need additional training or not. The first step is to take the Word Skills Test that is found on our website at www.scopeschool.com. From there, we can give you suggestions on what training, if any, you might want to consider. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at issadmit@montana.com.

Thanks!

Buy the Morson's Court Reporting book.(80 bucks) Get the Digital Cat software for scopists. (About 45 bucks.) List yourself under Digital Cat Scopists by saying you're new and ask a court reporter to bring you along. When you find a reporter that will give you a chance, ask her or him for a copy of a few of their transcripts and study them. After you do a few transcripts yourself, ask for feedback. Have a good attitude. Every reporter has a different style and preference. So you have to be flexible to work with.
