What CAT program are you on?

If the laptop that crashed is not working, then how are you intending to get access to the hard drive?  You might want to call a computer repair shop and see if the can transfer from the old crashed laptop to the new laptop.  If you get that done, be sure to make a copy of your dictionary.

Are you using DigitalCat Student or DigitalCat Professional?  You may have to go to Stenovations and get a new activation code and download the software.  If you are on Student or still paying a monthly fee, then that shouldn't be a problem.

Go into Windows Explorer and copy the whole user folder.  Not the software!  That will be reinsalled.  The entire user folder should have all your work and settings and PD, etc.  Well, if it was Catalyst, it would.  Then copy the whole user folder over to your new computer.  And you're set.

will do thanks so much for responding.  I am new to the csrnation so far so good.  Again, thanks !

Obviously you need something large enough to copy your user folder to.  A flash drive don't suffice.  You need an external hard drive.  And then AFTER you reinstall your software, you go into Windows Explorer on your new computer and you should know where to copy your user folder to.  Call tech support!

Thanks I needed the second part to your answer.  I do and did have an external drive and I will do it now and let you know.  Thanks again.

Nice grammar/typo on my part.  A flash drive won't suffice I meant!  Do you have Catalyst?  Many people would advise to back up from within Catalyst, which creates a zip file which you then "restore" within Catalyst on new computer.  I don't bother with that.  I use Windows Explorer exclusively.

I have digitalcat software by stenovations.  I am going to use my toshiba external back up and locate my dictionary and my drivers.  I need help with drivers for my vista windows so that my elan mira can work.  Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you downloads drivers off the web.  That way you'll get the latest and greatest.

Is your new laptop going to Vista as well?  I would think it would be better to go with Windows 7 and get new drivers.

I do have windows 7 and can load it and then I will start all over.  Windows 7 is better right?

so I will need to uninstall vista pkg. 2 then?  Of course do I need to back up all my files to the external drive?
