I just got a new Epsom fax/scanner/copier.  It serves my purposes.  I'm setting it up now.

But it has phone line cord to hook in to the telephone line.  You don't "have to" send faxes by phone do you?  Can't you just scan a document and send it through the computer?

Thanks.

Faxes are pretty obsolete at this point if you ask me.  I never fax anything.  Just scan and send.

Kerry,

I think they all come with faxes.  You can just use the scanner part and scan it to your computer.  I just ignore the fax.  Hardly anyone uses them anymore.

I don't fax anymore either.  Finally gave up my fax line.  Have the fax machine for the twice a year I'll ever need it if that.  Scan & email for me, too.

Okay, thanks.  So I'm fumbling my way through the manual............there is a USB port.  So do you have to scan to a flash drive and then email from the flash drive or can you scan directly into your computer if it's hooked to the scanner/fax?  It's an ink jet and I have always had toner machines because I think the printing is better.  This copies fine on typed material, but not so great on copying pictures.  I hope it scans pictures clearer than it copies or prints them.

You scan directly to your computer.

Thanks Kelli.  I got that working.  Why is it when I scan to PDF to my computer, it only gives me a choice of printing it in color, not black and white?  The black and white button is unlit and I have to push the color button to get it to scan.  Could it be that it's sensing it's a color document I'm trying to scan?  What if I want to scan a color document to a black and white PDF?  I'll see if I can get the answer from Epson.  It's not in their manual.

Just curious, Kerry, why you'd want to scan a color document to black & white.

I wouldn't.  But I don't want to scan a black and white document in color.

Just heard an adorable radio commercial for I have no idea what product but the little kid keeps asking his dad why why why.  The cutest thing.   Literally 3 seconds later I read your post, Kerry, and sorry but I have to ask why!      My ScanSnap has a setting called "auto color detection," so I don't pay attention to what I'm scanning and any setting.    So what's the result when a black & white doc is scanned in color?

well, it scans the black and white in black and white, but it's weird that the black and white button is greyed out when I scan to PDF and I only have the choice of pushing the color button,

Then there must be auto color detection on this scanner, too, and it's greying out "black & white" because it's a useless command.  Ha.  Who knows.  You're getting a good result so. . .

Did you mean the Kia commercial, Marge?   I just saw that last night.  :)
