Welcome to CSR Nation
I bought a Dell Latitude E6430s, 14", solid state hard drive, 4 RAM. I got sort of a deal because it was an open box but brand new with Windows 7. I paid $900, regularly $1200. It's a business-class laptop. Wow, the sound is so good, I don't need a mic for depos. Larger rooms possibly would need something.
The Samsung I bought earlier this year literally fell apart. I've decided I need a higher quality laptop. In case anyone is interested, I have seen similar models of this Dell laptop (even better with more RAM) for sale on eBay, some refurbished and without Dell warranty. Anyway, it's a great laptop for sound. The speakers are very good too, backlit keyboard. Only has one mic/headphone jack but so far I'm using it without a mic. Only has two USB ports but that's not an issue for me.

Great report, Martha! Lots of luck with the new machine. Thanks for sharing the interesting details.
You can always buy a USB external port thingy. They're less than $10.00. Mine has three USB outlets.
Mary Jo, I bought the Dell XPS 15 for $800, on sale from $1,300. Haven't gotten it yet. It supposedly has great sound, two separate jacks for mic and headset and no number pad. Windows 7. Do you know anything about this one? I never cared for the Latitude's screens in the past.
This Dell XPS is the most awesome laptop I've had since my old Dell Inspiron 8600 I got way back in 2002. It has a beautiful screen, great audio, two separate jacks for audio and mic, built in CD drive and Windows 7. I got it for $800 in December. It says they retail for about $1,300. No number pad either, 15 inch screen. On the heavy side, but it's for home editing and only to take to a job as a backup if needed.
No number pad, wonderful idea. I have never once used a number pad. What a waste of plastic! Your XPS sounds wonderful!
