Transcription Work

I have a neighbor that wants to dust off her steno machine (she's not certified) and start doing transcription work for reporting agencies. I think her intent is to do depos or court work that's (gasp) digitally recorded.

I told her I didn't know right off who has that type of work, nor the remuneration for such work, but that I'd post the question here.

So...
Where do "transcriptionists" go to pick up work?
How much does this gig pay?

That's a good idea. Maybe even look into has ER courtrooms and contact the head of the -- I don't know -- the CRs to see who does their transcription of tapes. Good one!

Maybe somebody could answer this one: She's got a quote from one source for .90 during "training" and $1.20 after "training." Ridiculous, correct? And, yes, that's PER PAGE.

I know a CSR who is doing tapes now for $1.00 a page. I have no idea what she's thinking. She could scope for even more than that. I've seen an ad in the paper for .90 a page too.

I do know some firms take tape work , and it can pay pretty well, as much as a regular page rate or even more if the sound quality is bad.

She could call some reporting agencies and ask around.

Any idea what the quality of the tape is and how many pages she's doing, let's say, in an hour?

No, she didn't say much about it other than she was transcribing tapes for an ER firm.
I just know from friends doing tapes and a proofer I used that you can make, I think, 3.00 to 5.00 a page or thereabouts, so when she offered to get me work through this company, I wasn't interested. I was thinking about doing tapes at the time because I had a newborn, but I ended up just taking short depos.

$18 a page?? Why don't they just use a reporter to begin with? And they complain we're expensive.
