If I were buying a tape transcriber today, I would NOT -- I repeat -- NOT buy a NEW Sony. That said, the Sony BM-45, Sony BM-50, and Sony BM-75, are the only Sony transcribers that are workhorses.

The new Sony transcriber, i.e., Sony BM-80 and above, has plastic gears and breaks down often. It's a POS. You can get the older Sony BM models on eBay pretty cheap these days. I buy Sony BM-45 transcribers on eBay for about 40 bucks, have it serviced for about $75 to $100, and it lasts for years.

Now, if I wanted to buy a brand-new transcriber, I would definitely go with the Sanyo Memoscriber TRC-8080. It has a slide bar for speed of audio, which allows you to have 2.4 (slow speed) and 4.8 (normal speed), which is GREAT. You can get a new one for about $250 to $325, depending on where you look.

HTH!

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a regular dictaphone to transcribe recorded tapes, the larger ones or the smaller tapes?

PLEASE HELP!!!! I used this type of equipment when I worked in an office but do not have any for home use.

Thanks, Agnes

Angela-

I've started a Word group for transcription questions such as yours. I posted a macro I have set up for Q and A. I am not sure it is exactly what you are looking for, but I have my F3 key set for Q and F4 set for A, same as my CAT software. The way it works is: goes to next line, adds Q or A, then tabs over ready to type.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hello all! I am interested in getting into Medical Transcriptions with my steno machine and am running into dead end after dead end. Could someone possibly give me a bit a direction?
Thank you much for your time : )

Hi from Costa Rica - Although I work as a realtime court reporter, I do have some time for temp transcription work - preferably what I know: trials, arbitrations, other verbatim reporting that I can do from my steno machine. Wishing you all the best!

Hi, all. I have been working for the past 25 years in the legal field as a Legal Assistant in the area of employment law, personal injury, medical/dental malpractice. I had to leave my employment recently for medical reasons and have been working for the past two years for a court reporting firm in Fort Lauderdale as a transcriptionist of audio files for deposition, hearings and trials as well as a Scopist and transcriber for reporters using Express Scribe and Transcription Buddy. I am available for overnight work, express, rush service as well as regular transcription and scoping work. I can transcribe any files in WAV, DSS, DCT, AU, WMA or any other sound format.

I can send samples of work I have done upon request.

Also willing to learn scoping for any other system if someone is willing to take a few moments to set me up and teach me or tell me how to begin. I am always willing to learn new things and could become an asset to the right person.

Hi everyone,
I am going to ask a real newbie question here....what exactly is legal transcription? I have been scoping for a year and a half and been so focused and busy with that, that I haven't really taken a look at the field of transcription.
I mean, I generally know what the job accomplishes at the end, but when is legal transcription used versus a court reporter with CAT software?
Does a transcription take the place of the software? Who uses legal transcription?
I know these are really newbie questions, but bear with me. Thanks!

Hi, I just joined the group, too, and wanted to say hello. I've done legal transcription work in Buffalo, New York for about 15 years. I graduated from reporting school but I never found a job as a reporter :(
