Welcome to CSR Nation
I was just wondering what a reporter should do if they are in a deposition and you simply can not understand your witness, whether it's due to accent or any other thing that might impare their speech? This was a question on a test once, and I just didn't know the answer. I know what I would do, but does anyone know what the "rule" is on this? I would simply tell the attorneys that I can't understand the witness and that I'm sorry but we can't go forward. It's my name on the certificate…

I am an experienced reporter who has been scoping recently for some heavy-hitter reporters, but I was wondering how the not-so-good reporters treat the scopists that help them. Please do not name anyone personally, but feel free to vent.

I had a witness give an inaudible response. Actually, there was no response given at all.
Do I have to put a parenthetical for no response?

What read back parentheticals do you use?

Editing a job. Sent out two roughs. Just found this:
". . . it appears right now that anytime soon this dick counsel for defendants may not be . . . "
It's supposed to be:

Hi reporters!
Need your opinion. Our family hasn't been on vacation in years. We need a vacation. We used to go to Cozumel, Mexico and loved it. Is it too dangerous there? Does anybody have any insight? Am I worrying too much?
Thank you!!

Recently, I responded to a call for an independent court reporter on CSRNation who may reside in Japan or be in Japan on a visit to engage in a deposition in Tokyo. I sent a note to Kelli Combs clarifying the situation in Japan for depositions. I thought I would share this with others on this site.
Japan has a set of specific laws regarding Depositions that everyone must be aware of before deciding to have one in the country. Additionally, to the best of my knowledge, there are no…

I've been a deposition reporter for 23 years, was out of reporting for almost two years, and now am an official for the first time in the courtroom. Let me just say I have great admiration for all of you officials. Holy Cow - the speeds, especially on L&M days. :) I'm also just learning CaseCatalyst. I will be getting training in a few weeks but have a couple bells and whistles I'm concerned about till then.…

Hi everyone.
I am on Digicat software which does not support electronic signature. Does anyone know how I can apply an electronic signature to my certificate page using a free software? I hear Adobe Acrobat will do the trick, but at a cost of $395.
Thanks, Maura

I am a CR student and am looking at pro writers and laptops. I have a good desktop that I will use at home so only need a laptop that is "good enough" for jobs. Any suggestion on laptop brands? Also, which is preferred, a laptop mic or a writer mic? I'm thinking used writers, possibly a Steno Fusion, and will definitely use CaseCat.
Gracias!

Hi, all.
I have endings defined as:
{Suffix}ing
{Suffix}s
{Suffix}ed
Yet when I write them, occasionally I get them not attaching to the root word, particularly if I pause on that second stroke. Is there anything I can do to get them to attach to the root word even with the pause?
Thanks for your help in advance.

So the other day, I had to stop the depo bec. there was this very loud beeping noise coming from God only knows where. Oh, yeah, it was me. What's going on? Am I about to crash? Nope. My disk was full and I had to end job soon!!!!
Okay. So I say, I just need a quick second to change out my floppy, at which all the attorneys in the room mocked me for using floppies. So there's one reason to get a new writer.
Second reason - I am on Eclipse and I will be…

I am new to CSR Nation, have been accepting jobs and working for different folks. Have you ever had that gut feeling that you won't get paid for that $1500 job you just labored over and turned in? What recourse do reporters have, short of small claims court, to make sure they are paid for their hard work from the agencies they help out through CSR Nation? How can I find out what agencies are ethical and which are not? Yelp, maybe? Just putting it out there to have an open dialogue with…

I guess it's too much to ask to be paid the approx. $50 owed to me by a certain reporter from LA for scoping. I'm not even getting responses to my e-mails. Initials are L.T-W.

It's been incredibly slow in So. Florida! I had a depo. call in for me today! The attorney said he had to move to cut his monthly expenses because business has been slow. Whenever I complain about not working, my friends ask how it can be true and aren't people sueing, etc. I work for two agencies and both have been very slow!

Hello everyone-
So my first job as a working reporter is a hearing. I've heard that hearings are generally short, and that's about all I know. What should I expect in a hearing? Is there anything "special" I need to do beforehand to be prepared? Thanks in advance for all your help.
