Gas prices - What are you paying in your neck of the woods to survive?

You know, I get a lot of questions about page rates and things like that. People are curious and they want to know. And I see page rates for other parts of the country. Well, the thing is they all have to be put into context, i.e., cost of living. So to get an idea of what things are costing us, let's take a survey of gas prices and miles that people are traveling to work. Very informal, just chime in whatever area you are.

Now, I live in California. Our standard of living is high here. A house despite the recent mortgage meltdown is still going to run you over $600K, a nice house, 3-bedroom. Condos are running $350K to $500K and up.

Gas prices here are about $3.50/gal (in the last week) for unleaded to $3.70 and up for Supreme unleaded for those of you who can afford the "nice" cars :)

I drive anywhere from 10 miles one way to 30 miles one way depending on if I'm working local or hauling myself into downtown LA.

What kind of prices are you guys looking at out there?

It's sad. I read an article the other day about how gas prices are getting so high that people are actually starting to carpool and ride public transportation more often. I'm not sad about that. The sad thing is that we, as court reporters, can't rideshare. Just not feasible. Unless, perhaps, we work in a courthouse.

where is that? My son is in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Their gas aalways cheaper, LOL. And I love their Wal-Mart! It is so polite! I don't like the one closest to me, LOL. Rude, un happy people go there, LOL. Rho
$3.70 here in Burlingame, Ca.
We will see $4.50 in 6 months, feel free to quote me if I am wrong.
I used to pay 0.89 cents a gallon in Covington, ky 7 years ago, good ol days :(
I'll tell you what, the Prius is the best purchase I've ever made in my life. I'm getting 50 mpg.

I bought my house in Northern California for 495k. I doubt I could get 400k for it today.
I am bitter. I so wanted to buy a hybrid a couple of years ago, but my husband said that it was too expensive. I say hah!! I could have saved so much money in gas by now. I'm sure it would have paid for itself.
They are still pretty expensive, but my husband did a graph on the computer to show how much we would save in gas, and it really is worth the price. I can fit two car seats in it easy and all my groceries.
Unfortunately I missed out on the carpool sticker by about a week.
Patricia,

I was lucky and got my stickers in time. That raises the value of my car $4,000 just because of the stickers. I have neighbors that are threatening to come in the middle of the night to steal my stickers Play Wink.
What are the stickers about? ?
Gov. Ahhhhhnold (CA) passed a somethingorother that if you were able to purchase a sticker (I think they cost $7; they only sold so many), you'd be able to get in the carpool lane ALONE. So, therefore, I get 42MPG (highway, not city travel; city travel gets more), but I also get to get into the carpool lane all by myself. Quite a coup when you travel 75 miles to your job frequently.

I'm a happy camper. My husband hates the car and would prefer I buy a respectable BMW.

Oh, I understand now. We don't have those lanes in this city, LOL. But I have been in them in New York City and Florida and such. 75 miles! That's a lot! I can do 90 but that is round trip. Rho
Trina,
I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Prius. Flimsy? As in would get crushed in a fender-bender or crash? But you're considering another one? Are the later models more crashworthy?
Highest prices I've ever seen around here. The "cheap" stations are $3.39. Oh, wait -- dropped all the way down to $3.37 yesterday. *rolls eyes*
Rochester, New York and our station went up to $3.41 cents today. I have an Elantra and I love it. I get about 300 miles to a tank. . I'm not an exact person to know how much per gallon, LOL. But takes about 28 or $30 to fill it. I'm not completely on empty, but past the last quarter mark. That is mostly driving around town also, not highway. I can go five hours to my son's house and not stop for gas. . That's highway travel. I don't have to fill right when I get there either, but before I leave for home I fill up. Rho
