I don't know about voice writers, but most companies are not interested in employing someone without experience and even experienced reporters are scrambling for work. Your best bet is to try to find a mentor.
Whatever state you live in, or want to live in, you need to find out that state's requirements. I'm not sure what voice writer means. I'm assuming you take shorthand and are getting up to 225.

There is no such thing as good jobs, not unless your father is a lawyer, you have connections, or are in a big demand area. Call the court reporting firms.
Thanks guYS!
I went to stenotype school for a total of two years in the '70s. I had no life while I was going to school. After I would get up at 5:30 a.m., get dressed, drive to school, come home, eat dinner, practice my drills and speed, I would have to go to sleep and do it all over again the next day. LOL

I would hate to read the transcripts today that I produced when I got out of school then. Some things are just not possible to teach, like accented speech, hard-to-hear speakers, VARIETY of transcript formats, technical subject matters, et cetera.

Where I gained the depth of my experience was working in-house at a busy court reporting company, learning from seasoned veterans in the industry. We didn't have Google or the Internet back then to look up unfamiliar terminiology.

Forums like this are truly a great tool. I enjoy networking with others about comma conundrums and word spellings, especially.

Becoming proficient in any field takes time, but one thing for sure, the more I know in this industry, the more I realize how much I don't know. I am still learning today. ;)
Thanks JenniE~ I alwayS liKE youR resPonseS!
Very reasonable and sound responses by all.
Don't get discouraged. I can't really speak for how many voice writer jobs there are out there, but I'm a new reporter and I've been getting work. It took me a couple weeks of being totally serious and trying lots of places (after a few weeks of not being very serious,) but I now have two firms that I'm working for. I'm not getting as much work as I want yet, but everyone is telling me they're slow right now. But there are places that will hire new reporters. In fact, some like the fact that you're willing to learn things their way instead of being stuck in your ways and not willing to change. Also, all firms have those super short jobs that don't pay a whole lot that their more experienced reporters don't want to take. If you always accept a job when it's offered, they're way more likely to keep calling you. My best advice is to start calling around and making contacts about a month before you'll be ready to start working and offer to intern with them. You'll find work.. don't stress yourself out. You have to focus focus focus in your last few months! Good luck.
Thanks for the good advice, Heather. I am also a student who will be looking for work in less than a year. This was very encouraging!
