I've never had an injury like that, but I have a teacher that was a court reporter for many years, had a surgery for carpal tunnel that ended up doing more harm than good, and ended up becoming a doctor specializing in holistic healing. I'm going to forward your post to her and see if she'd be willing to offer some advice.
I'll let you know what she has to say right away.
Best of luck to you, and whether you decide to try the surgery or some other approach, have faith.
