Hi Kwanna, Here's a link for the installation of the USB adapter. It's a great demo: http://www.usb-serial-adapter.com/index.html You'll be up & running in no time. Windows 7 is great. What an improvement over Vista. Janet

Laurie -- In your case, if you recall, Stenograph sold you the Keyspan adapter -- which is a good adapter -- as long as you're notusing it with a Stenograph writer and digitalCAT. For those of you just tuning in, as it were, Laurie is…

I just looked on the Stenograph website. Windows 7 is not listed on their USB-to-serial adapter system requirements. Please check with them first if you decide to go that route to see if it's compatible. I am using the one in the link above,…

Why not buy the usb to serial adapter that Stenograph sells? They only sell stuff that they know works with their writers. Besides, if you need help with it, Stenograph will be able assist you, and they don't charge you for that.

Hi Kwanna, I bought a CoolGear USB to serial adapter that has a driver for Windows 7. Did the Radio Shack rep. tell you that the Gigaware adapter had Windows 7 driver? You should return it if it doesn't have the Windows 7 driver. Here is a…

A note of caution: If you buy your laptop from Eclipse, make sure they update your drivers BEFORE sending the computer to you. One of my reporters had audio problems with her laptop purchased from Eclipse. It was difficult to get Eclipse to respond…

Ohmygosh, Kwanna. I saw the do-it-yourself shim article too. However, I would never recommend shimming your writer on your own. Never. M.A.

HOPE YOU CAN HELP!!!

Hello my CSR nation friends. I am looking to purchase a Stentura 200 SRT or 400 SRT. I have reached a point in my life where i have to get the ball rolling. My professional machine will come in due time, however, i need something now so i can build up my accuracy and focus on learning my software. I don't want to spend no more than 300.00. I know its not much, but that's all i can spend for now.As always thanks a million.See More

The NCRA realtime contest results are a perfect example of why I feel that Eclipse is far more superior to Procat. I don't know how it all unfolded this summer, but last summer the top six or seven qualifiers were all on Eclipse. A couple…

Hi Kwanna,

Everything is working great with Eclipse and Windows 7. At first I hadn't turned off my User Control Settings in Windows 7, and that was causing things not to work properly in Eclipse. But now that I fiexed that, everything is working perfectly!

I like Windows 7. It's much, much better than Vista. It doesn't get hung up installing updates, and when turning it on and off.

If you have any questions once you get the computer, let me know!

Eclipse is great! I learned on Case CATalyst, but have transitioned just fine. I would recommend it!

Oh, I can't send you a message. Oh, well.
First, don't get me wrong. DigitalCat has some bells and whistles. While writing real-time on the job, I can fix things from my machine. For instance, I can search for a word and replace it in two strokes. I can correct the last untran. I can delete words five lines above without removing my hands from the steno machine. They have some bells and whistles.
Here's the few that I know of that I would be nice to have:

One is the autobrief. If you are writing a word over and over, some of the other softwares will suggest a stroke for you and automatically make that a brief for you. It's pretty cool.

It would also be nice to have a meter that shows how many words a mintue they are talking.

Another is that some softwares show you how many times you wrote a certain word.

And it would be nice if the scopists could make corrections in a different color so that you know what corrections the scopist made.

Those are the only ones that I know of. There may be more. If you have any more questions, just ask.

But, again, these are things you do not need

I didn't realize you were a student. You can use the student version for free. Then when you go to work, you get the full version for six months instead of 90 days before you have to pay for it. There are training videos on the website, and a manual you can download. At the beginning of the manual is a quick start guide to get you going.

There is also a Stenovations user forum at http://stenovations.com/pforum/ You can join that and post questions you have. I am the moderator of the forum. You can also email me at ilovedigitalcat2@hotmail.com.

Hi Kwanna, I had this problem too when I was in school. I had to learn to focus on the phonetic sound of the words. I was one that always pushed in speeds. Once I got to 225 it was hard for me to go to 200. Once I learned to focus, I got through pretty quickly. I still use that focusing tool. For me that one lesson has been a lifesaver. I close my eyes when I need to focus and concentrate on breathing steady and paced. When I try to write too fast, like I'm running, I drop, but when I do this exercise it seems to slow the speaker down in my head. Some people stare a something on the wall or their shoe. You may have heard people talking about going into a bubble. All of these work for different people. I would also stop pushing your speed and just focus on the 200 class and speed. If you have mastered 225, it won't be a problem to pick it up again when you need it. Good Luck!

Hi, Kwanna. I had a momentary bout of buyer'$ remor$e. It's a lot of money, and I really do feel it is a permanent decision. I also spoke with a competitor's representative yesterday. The phone call left me unsettled, because I was told that the other software resolves conflicts just as well. I went back and looked through all of my information and notes, and I just can't accept that as fact.

I am fully committed now. If you have a lot of conflicts, then I absolutely think you made the right choice. That is what Eclipse does well.

Are you contemplating the professional or student version? If you get the student version, they will allow you to make quarterly payments, which are about $100 each.

Hi, Kwanna!

They have a good company that they use that offers a lease to buy program. That's what I did when I first got my license and bought Eclipse. My payments are $131 a month. I wouldn't recommend buying it from somebody because you might need the support when you first start off and you won't get it unless you pay a transfer fee! Call them and see what options they have available! I recommend Susquehanna as the leasing company!

I think Charlotte is the biggest city in NC and the closest you'd get to your hometown... but that's not to say it's a lot like NYC! However, it does have the feel of a bigger city. Charlotte has some good opportunities. Don't know the cost of living there, though. Definitely come down and scope it out! ;)
