Lesson Learned: My Brand-New HP Laserjet Printer

My HP Laserjet 1320 printer died. I researched the HP printers and ended up geting the HP Laserjet P2050DN. I didn't need the "DN," but they were out of the regular HP Laserjet P2050. It must be a popular model. The "N" stands for network, which I don't have. I don't know what the "D" means, at least not yet.

So I plugged it up, placed the toner cartridge in it, and then let it self-install with the HP CD.

I was so bummed, as the printer just would not print. I tried… Continue

Swearing in Witness

For those of you working as deposition reporters, would you be so kind as to give me the exact wording on the oath that you give to witnesses? Is there a standard oath? Is it okay to use your own wording as long as certain specific words are there? Working in court for my entire reporting career, the Clerk swears in all witnesses, so I've never had the "honor" of doing it. BTW I am a p/t instructor at a court reporting school, and your answers will benefit future court… Continue

Readback

I took Volume II of a depo. Volume I was taken by a completely different reporter. I am a 5'2 Korean woman. The reporter for Volume I, the day before, was a tall, blonde white woman.

At the start of the depo, the attorney turned to me and asked me to read the last question from the day before.

I just looked at him for a second. I was so amazed my mind actually went blank. I reminded him that I wasn't the reporter from the day before.

I know we're… Continue

Things you wish you could say during a depo

Feel free to talk over each all you want, I'm not listening.

I write at 225 wpm, I will drop all words starting at the 226th word and on for those minutes you choose to speak at 300 wpm.

Do you think the room has been struck deaf. We can all hear you whispering really loudly to your client and chances are that counsel can hear you instructing your client and I can hear you. Take it outside if you don't want it on the record.

Why do you think I am a lip reader… Continue

Pandora has started charging

I am absolutely bummed. I wrote a long while back about Pandora, which is an online music service where you can listen to music while you're proofing. It used to be all free. And I discovered a lot of new music.

Well, they've started charging. You get 40 hours free, and then they charge. You can pay $36 for the year, which is not much. But it's like paying for radio, I rebel.

Today I listened to Yahoo… Continue

Mouse in My House. EEK!

Last night, I woke up about 2:30 a.m. My eyes were tired and scratchy, and I was a little dizzy as I was walking to the bathroom. I was still half asleep, but then I got the shock of my life. EEK! It was a tiny gray mouse scampering for cover in my bathroom. The door was shut, and he was trying to get out, running back and forth furiously. The faster he ran, the louder I screamed. I didn't know what to do. It was just me and a mouse trapped in the bathroom, with nowhere to… Continue

How To Interrupt the Proceedings

Okay. All you veteran reporters, please, share with us newbies how you handle interrupting the proceedings.

I just started reporting hearings last week. I have discovered that I have not had much training in the way of interrupting when the speakers are speaking too fast. It seems I am comfortable in asking for a repeat if I didn't hear something correctly.

I would appreciate any scenarios you have to share. How do you tactfully ask the judge to slow down? What language do… Continue

Don't You Wish...

...that you could create one brief for the entire transcript? Walk in, set up, listen to them talk all day long, as fast as they want, seven hours, then just hit one stroke, pack up your equipment and go home? And have perfect translation, too, 100 percent.

Maybe just two strokes, BHRA BHRA.

On this court reporting road

Hey Everyone:

I know that I had withdrawn from CSRNation for quite some time. I had many things going on in my life and social networking sites like this one and facebook just took a back seat. My mom had to have her ovaries and uterus removed because doctors had found some tumors. I had to take care of my mom for a month and half, not to mention her cousin passing away the week before the surgery.

Since she couldn't work I had to take on her job, and still work mine to… Continue

LAS VEGAS

I'm not sure if this is a duplicate or not. I thought I was sending a post and got a message "sorry please enter a value for post" So as you can tell this is my first post.

I'm inquiring if there are any Nevada reporters who are aware of the reporting situtation in Las Vagas and Henderson, NV. I have two lovely elderly parents currently living in Henderson and as we are ALL aging, I'm keeping my relocation options open and fluid. Any information would be very much… Continue

On July 15th the latest movie will be released in the Harry Potter series, Half Blood Prince. If you're a fan like me, they don't make the movies fast enough. The first two movies, The Sorcerer's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets, are my favorites. J.K. Rowling is a gifted writer with a fantastic imagination. I'll be out there waiting in line with all the other Potter fans, and I will… Continue
