JAC IN FLORIDA

Has anyone out there ever taken a depo for a court-appointed attorney where the reporter is supposed to get paid from the State of Florida Justice Administrative Commission, and if so, have you had trouble getting paid? What's the deal with the state agency? My invoice for a transcript is now some months old and the atty says they have trouble getting paid from JAC, too. I have jumped through all the hoops, signed a vendors "contract", sent W-9 form, etc., etc. and still no payment. What to do?… Continue

My Favorite Holiday Gift Was...

...a magnetic peace sign given to me by my daughter. I've been seeing other vehicles with these magnetic peace signs on them, but I did not know where to get one. The ones I had seen were solid pastel colors.

My daughter knew I wanted one, and she found out where to buy them: Vermont Peace Works

She got me the tie-dyed one which looks really cool on my black… Continue

Can't keep poker face

I am a student and I've been sitting in. Today I got spoken to by the owner of the agency because the reporter told her that I reacted to testimony with a facial expression. She told the owner that it happened more than once. I'm not really aware of it happening. How do you keep the poker face when the testimony is either so moving or sad or shocking?

I'm finally reaching a breakthrough!

Well, I have my last actual homework assignment to do in my speed class, then it's off to finals. I'm actually feeling pretty confident, surprisingly. I just didn't think that it would actually come before the end of the semester. I think I will be able to get the 3 grades that I need for lits, jc's, and q&a's. I've seen a huge improvement overall in my tests. I jumped from a 69 to a 92 to a 93! The was such a confidence booster!!! Well I'm gonna go practice some and get this last lit… Continue

Stowaway kitty!

Yesterday, during a break in the California storm, my husband and I set out for errands. He started up the engine to our GMC Sierra truck and off we went. As we were driving down the street, we both heard a loud "meow" that sounded as though it came from under the hood. He stopped, looked under the truck and found our kitty, Rocky, had settled himself on top of the spare tire that was positioned under the bed of the truck. Needless to say, we turned back (Rocky was howling the whole time) and… Continue

Chester Gets College Degree: A Cautionary Tail

Yes, "tail" as in dog, though this is some tale here about Chester the Pug Dog getting a degree.

Money can't buy you love, but for $499, you can buy a college degree.

Chester Ludlow, a pug dog from Vermont, has been awarded an online MBA (Masters in Business Administration) by Rochville University—an online college that offers distance learning degrees based on life and career experience.

Chester is believed to be the first dog to be awarded a college degree… Continue

Help! Help! Help! Diamante/Eclipse pairing

Recently graduated and just got my Diamante. Along with the machine I also purchased the wireless realtime kit. Can anyone please help me figure out how to get my Eclipse program to recognize the writer? I had it working; but when I got home and set up to practice, it won't connect anymore. Earlier today I called Stenograph. They said they could help with Diamante, but know nothing about Eclipse. Called Eclipse later in the day and they said they could help with Eclipse, but know nothing about… Continue

HP mini

Just bought one this weekend. The Acer keyboard was way too small. An important feature for me.
Also, it has Windows 7 which I wanted to play with and see how I liked it. Since Livenote doesn't do
demos anymore, I'm trying to find out the name of the site that you can download for free the ability
to view realtime on this and use it for attorneys who can't get hooked up or don't have a dongle, etc.
A good investment for not a huge amount of money!

Eclipse Audio files disappearing

I have a major problem. For some reason my Eclipse audio files will disappear after a short time. I will hit Alt+J and a box will come up saying "JT.wav not found." But the last time I went into that file there was an audio file. This keeps occurring. What am I doing wrong?

Rough ascii requirements

Happy Saturday! I was just wondering if you could all tell me what you change for a rough ascii before it goes out. Do you just translate steno untranslates and nothing else? Or do you change the speaker names to the right people, read through it entirely and fix stuff you see quickly??

I really haven't done a rough ascii before, and I want to make sure I am sending them what they're expecting.

Thanks!!

HP MiniNetBook

Just wondering if anyone can give me some feedback on using the HP Mini Netbook, or any small notebook-type computer. I want to try out using it for depos, and then come back home and transfer it to my larger laptop. I like the idea of a small computer, and have a small computer now, but I really want to utilize the Mini Netbook computers out there, which are even smaller than what I have presently.

I know there are a lot of reporters that have been using the Acers for realtime, to… Continue

Dale Sherry, Videographer, passes away Saturday, 11/28/2009

My dear friend and colleague succumbed to his latest bout with cancer on Saturday, November 28, 2009, with his family by his side. We will miss him. He was a good friend, a videographer who took his work (or as he put it, his "art") very seriously, always cordial, professional, and polite with those he worked with. I started working with Dale over 25 years ago when I was first starting out. We had many unusual experiences together professionally, from spending a week in the Chowchilla Women's… Continue
