What read back parentheticals do you use?

My parenthetical is:  (The Certified Court Reporter read the following:) followed by the readback, concluding with one line of -  -  - as a line separator.  Not padding.  It looks appropriate.

I never understood the "padding" argument, probably made by "fearful-but-non-educated" agency owners or reporters.  Readback is what was stated and what occurred.  For videodeps, do you also leave out the readbacks?   Readback is part of the record and belongs included in it.

I quote what was read.  I have a parenthetical built in for my scopist:  THE REPORTER: "

 

All they have to do is copy/paste and add a "

 

However, if they asked for something above, I usually quote that myself immediately bc it most likely won't be on the audio.

I ALWAYS put in the record what was read.  I've had way too many attorneys request that I do that, so I always do.  I think it is way more clear what was read instead of just (Record read.) because you could have read something back four pages earlier and it's unclear. 

Also, including the readbacks, you get way more pages that way.  More pages mean more $$$$.

Yeah, Janiece, that is what I used to do too.  If the previous question was right above the request to read back, I didn't repeat it.

I was trained to quote the text read back if it is further back in the transcript, for example, on a previous page.  I see what you are saying, it would make the transcript longer if you put the whole thing in every time.

I don't always include what I read back at every depo, but I do make the parentheticals consistent throughout the job.   Recently I had about 400 pages (Volumes 1 and 2) where I read back almost every other question, and just put (Record was read by the reporter.)  If I had included the readback, I am sure I would have been accused of padding the bill.  It would have been a very nice paycheck, though, on an O&4.  It may be a regional preference since Kelli and I work in the same area.  Or I picked up the habit when I was doing the videotaped highly technical patent cases I used to take a lot of.   I have a reporter friend who is so good she can cut and paste the readback into the parenthetical during the depo!  I add it in during edit.

Oh, so Kelli and Kellie, you have your blurb and then you put your actual readback into the parenthetical.  That makes it really clear what happened.  I think I like that.
