I know. I know. Jumping the gun. 2008 isn't even over. But . . .

So does anyone do their own 1099's for their scopist or proofer? Is it difficult to do? I want to send 1099's out this year, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Great topic. What's the requirement, anything over $600 is it??? I'm way over that, so preparing a 1099 is in my very near future.
It's super easy. You just put their SS or employment ID on it and how much you paid them. I'm almost certain it's over $600 a year.
I just read on the IRS website that a "scannable" form has to be used, that the one online is not scannable when printed, that there's a $50 penalty for using it. Maybe the post office has forms?
I get the forms from my CPA. I'll bet they're available via TurboTax as well. Don't know about the post office. But they're a breeze to fill out once you get the correct form.
I get mine from the accountant. I would think either the post office or library should have them.
The public library has them for free so you don't have to buy the whole packet. That's where I've always gotten my 1099s.
This was a great thread to get started. I'm learning a lot about the 1099 which I will have to file one for a scopist this year and wanted to know more information about it.
I don't normally have to do this. This was just a one-time deal. And whenever I have shared work with other scopists (only with the court reporter's prior approval!!), I requested the court reporter pay each scopist individually so that I would not have that headache at the end of the year.

filetaxes.com looks great. It's $3.79 per 1099:
YOU ENTER DATA ONLINE…FILETAXES.COM DOES THE REST!
We take care of everything else for you. E-filing with the government is done and all your recipient copies are mailed!

We take care of...
E-filing with the IRS or SSA
Printing and mailing recipient forms
Providing a payer copy
Emailing a confirmation

Great thread, Kyung ~ you must have been reading my mind!! This is the first year I'm sending out 1099's to proofreaders and my husband I were just talking about it last night (the fact that I had no idea how to do it:)) Another question, if someone makes under $600 and you don't 1099 them, can you then not write it off?? I was planning on calling my CPA first of the year w/ a bunch of questions ~ but, heck, if we can get them answered here, that's wonderful. If we don't know, give me questions and I'll still call ~ at least my calls are free;)
You can still write it off, they just don't get a 1099 if under $600.
I don't really know the IRS laws and what affect it would have by you generating a 1099 under $600, but when I work for a company maybe once a year and it's under $600, I just add it to my total gross income with no 1099 attached, and I'm sure the companies just add it to their total outgoing for their tax forms. I would not ask your proofreader if she would like one until you checked with a CPA about producing a 1099 under $600.
Whenever I have little payments that are under $600, I still itemize them on my taxes. Because if you lump them together they end up being way over $600.

I just finished filing all my 1099s through FileTaxes.com It was pretty easy. So hopefully they all get processed by the IRS and it all goes smoothly.

Don't wait until the last minute. It's really easy.
