I am not sure how to handle this with a.m. and p.m. coming at the beginning of a sentence. Which is right?

Example 1:
Q. Was that in the morning or at night?
A. a.m.

Example 2
Q. Was that in the morning or at night?
A. A.M.

It's still a little early here. I'll be heading out in a bit to Kapoulei and then the Dole plantation for pineapple this afternoon. I guess I am addicted to reporting! Shesh!
