I am in the process of looking at a new billing software system for reporter payroll as well as attorney billing, etc.  Any thoughts on ReporterBase v. Acculaw v. ????

Any thoughts/opinions/experience would be most helpful.  Thank you!

NYC QUILT FOR NCRA FOUNDATION

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, I have relinquished the quilt to NCRA already and do not have a picture of this particular quilt; however, last year it was on their website and in the JCR Journal. Thanks Jane

NYC NCRA QUILT FOR CONVENTION

If you are going to the convention, would you please consider buying a ticket to win the quilt which I have donated to the Foundation. It is 100% cotton and can be washed and dried easily. A quilt is the ubiquitous gift for infants to elders. Last year's quilt (my masterpiece) raised $1700 and was won by Nancy Varello. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you very much, Jane LaPorte, Columbia,SC, www.Lordandlaporte.com or… Continue

Anyone taking the train to OAH (LA and/or San Diego)?

I'm in Riverside, and I'm trying to find out whether or not I can rely on the train to get to the OAH office in Los Angeles and possibly San Diego. To be more specific, I'm trying to confirm I can actually count on getting there reasonably close to the scheduled arrival time. I've heard some reporters do it regularly.

I'm trying to find a way to be a team player and commute wherever I'm needed without running my car into the ground if possible.

Thanks for your time.

Anti-Virus Software--What are you using?

I wanted to get a consensus on what folks are using out there.

It seems there are some Anti-Virus software programs that disrupt or slow down my Eclipse.

What have you found to be effective without slowing down your other programs?

Thanks for your input!

Culver City/Los Angeles recommendations

My husband and I will be traveling from South Florida to the Culver City/Los Angeles area on Sunday.  We're staying through Wednesday.  Anybody have a great restaurant they want to share?

Cost of CD

In an effort to avoid violating the Sherman Act, I will speak in generalities.  A client asked me recently to justify the cost of an ASCii disk charged by another reporting firm.  I was shocked.  The cost was over 175% of what I and others I know charge.  I think a possibility is that the firm is not charging for an appearance fee which they would have to share with the reporter; on the other hand, if it is for a disk then the firm would not necessarily share…

What I wish I knew my first year as a reporter

I haven't done one of these in a while.  So let's talk about your first depo, what you should know and what you should ask and what you should do.

I'm going to assume you know the rate for the job you are about to take, payment terms, you have your equipment, and the job has been confirmed.

These are things that I like to ask the agency before the depo starts.  It will make you look more like a professional

Time estimate - I always ask for a time estimate.  …

Steno-related jobs that don't require CSR

I've passed two legs of the RPR and hope to pass my Q&A in May and take the CA CSR in July.  I'm looking for steno-related jobs to 1) pay the bills and 2) expand my dictionary and obtain all the steno experience I can.  Is there anybody out there that knows of LA/Orange County area agencies that hire non-CSRs to provide steno for business meetings or conventions -- any type of work that does not require a CSR license?  Thanks!

Heidi Schlamowitz?

Has anyone worked with a court reporter named Heidi Schlamowitz? I can't get in touch with her even though she gave me her number. She is in either Florida or New York, based on phone numbers.

Real Time

Hi all!!!

I'm a fairly new reporter, almost a year, living in Southern California.  I have been contemplating buying cables for real time so that attorneys can hook up.  However, as I ask around, veteran reporters and agencies, I am noticing that real time is rarely requested in depos.  I can understand in court since you are connected with the judge.  So my question is, is it worth my investment to purchase the cables?

City/County Business Licenses

What does everyone do when traveling to locations out of the judicial district/city/county you live in about city and county business licenses?  If you work out of your home and the business you do out of your home generates no traffic whatsoever, and you don't inventory salable products, since it is a professional service, and you have no place to publicly display (required) the license, why do we have to have it?    The state has taken over the issuing of city and county business licenses…
