Rhoda Colins has asked me about editing with Dragon Pro 9 so I've started this new discussion.

Rhoda,

Do you ever go on the NCRA website? I posted over there about editing with Dragon. I'll just do a quick copy and paste for you. If you want to read some comments about that post, do a search there for Dragon Pro 9 and it will pop up. Recently, Dorothy McGrath, another Eclipse reporter, has expressed interest in Dragon and may post in the future. Here's the NCRA paste:

Misty,

You asked me, "What is Dragon Pro 9 to edit with Eclipse?" Well, this is not the short answer, but it could be way longer!

At the end of September I purchased Dragon Professional 9 - "The world's first and foremost software product that recognizes and creates general text from normal speech," which allows me to create voice macros just like Eclipse's hyperkeys. They were extremely quick and easy to create. For example, if I want to insert an off-the-record discussion, I just say, "Read discussion." If I want to create an index, I say, "Index." I can turn off hyperkeys, move my cursor by voice to the correct spot, speak any word and have it appear. With Global Magic now I just say, "Choose 1," or "Choose 4," to select the correct word. The same with any conflict. To do a find and replace I say, "Find - somebody - replace - someone - enter." Instead of hitting Ctrl L, I say, "Find down."

My first step in editing a transcript is to perform a quick edit using only voice - scanning for untrans - "Scun," globaling - "Gee" if it's a one-stroke or "Two Stroke, Three Stroke," and resolving conflicts - "Conflict - Choose 1," before sending the job off to my scopist. When I proof it, I use a combination voice and keyboard - mainly voice, though. "Go to page 22 - line 4." If I don't want to use my scopist for a particular job, I have the ability to edit the entire job myself using voice alone.

Here's a comparison of different Dragon versions. The Pro is the only one that will let you create and perform the macros. Http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/matrix/

Patrick Seeley of Advantage told me to purchase from SpeakingNaturally.com because they offer such good support. I paid $754.95 for the Pro - a huge investment for me, but well worth it!

If any steno reporter is dealing with body issues and would like to keep off the computer keyboard as much as possible, I highly recommend Dragon Pro 9. It's fantastic to use for surfing the Internet, dictating e-mails and forum posts as well.

Thanks for the info Jenny. I never have time to browse NCRA. I am on the Compuserve one more. I follow the Stenograph forum as I use Case Cat. But I may go check your thread out. This sounds interesting!

Jenny,
I got the regular version of Dragon today and it really is awesome to work with! At Staples, thru 1/19/08 there is a $50.00 rebate, so a good time to test this software out! Wanted to share that. Thanks SO much for informing me!
Rho
Rhoda,

When you say regular, you mean the least expensive? In other words, not the Dragon Preferred? I really want to know how you think it works for you. After setting it up and doing your little audio adjusting/dictating thing, I recommend that instead of dictating in an actual email, you dictate using the Dragon Pad. I find it makes for a better translation. Then you copy from there and paste it into the email.

You're so enterprising - that's inspiring! Jenny
Yes, not the Preferred. I am getting used to it, but I really like it.

I also use my machine in Steno Notes in Case Cat to write my emails and such. Gives me machine practice, lol. But this Dragon is fun!
Rho
Thanks for the info. I went and got it from Staples today with $50 rebate :) big savings!
Can someone tell me, do you set it up with Eclipse like creating macros or how do you start setting it up?
Thanks for your help!
GG
Rhonda,
I wonder how you set yours up. Because it seems like you guys had no problem setting the program up with Eclipse without adding another software.
When I called Eclipse Tech support to ask them how do I set it up to work with Eclipse, the guy told me that I would need another software "Speed gate" to work it, otherwise I can't use it.
Can someone tell me if that is the case?
Thanks for your help.

GG,

I'm sorry I can't help you out regarding the Standard Dragon and Eclipse. I have the Pro version which is the only version you can create macros with. I'm still not sure exactly what the Preferred version will do in Eclipse. For example, I don't know if when you hit F for find and then speak a word, the word will appear in the find box. I do know that the Standard version is great for dictating emails.

Hopefully someone who knows something regarding the Standard version will answer your question.

Good luck, Jenny
Yes, I guess the standard does not have the specs the the 9 has.
Thanks for you help, Jenny.

I use Case. I am not doing Macros with it. I am comfortable with those on my keyboard, and was not 'my' goal to do that w/Dragon. So can't help! :(

Hi Rhonda,

I was soo waiting for your reply cause you said you had the standard and tried it.
Could you tell me how does it help you with editing?

Thanks,
GG
GG,
I had a depo, a divorce, and had a bunch of drops as they talked fast and were talking over each other. It was near the end and I got tired of stopping/etc and just used Audio Sync to get it...I know, bad. But I was able to put my cursor in my transcript, slow down my AS in Case and talk 'with' them using Dragon and insert the drops. Macros and such I still use the keyboard.
Rho
Rhonda,

Got it. So you are mainly using it to fill in blamks and not editing per se, like fixing punctuations, find untrans ect. I guess even this way, it still saves you sone keyboarding tasks.
Now, I was under the wrong impression that you can actually do 90% of your editing with it.....just wishing:)
Thanks for your help and have a great wkend.
