Faster way to use colon for times?

Hi Everyone - I wanted to check with you all and see if anyone has a faster way to include the colon when writing clock times? I'm finding it extra difficult to stroke KL*N between the hour and minute numbers! I just end up putting it in during editing, which may cause problems in the future. Thanks future court reporters!!

Carley, I rely on the number resolution feature on my software. Are you using student software? What kind?

I have the student version of Case Catalyst. I stroke the numbers, then KL-K, and it is formatted as time. The only exception is if the time ends in 10, 11, or 12 minutes, then you have to use KL-K/R-R. (This, of course, is for Phoenix, I don't know which theory you're using).

Why not just use K HR O PB between the numbers and define K HR O PB as delete space colon delete space. (Or any other stroke that won't conflict with your theory.)

Thank you for all the input! Have tried all of these to see which works best. So far, I like adding "T-M/T-M" after so it converts to time. For some reason, it's easier than striking KL*N between the hour/minute. Still exploring all ideas! Always looking for ways to save edit time!

Here's how I do it, Carley, to shave down on strokes:

I use *RBGS with my numbers on the left side

1:30 1*RBGS/30
2:30
3:30
4:30
5:30
10:30

11:30 (A little different because I use my U to double the 1)

1U*RBGS/30

12:30 12*RBGS/30


When I go to the numbers on the right side:

SKWR with the number

6:30 SKWR6/30
7:30
8:30
9:30

Along with the U to double a number, I use the E to reverse it.

So I can write any combination of any time in two strokes.

It's a bit complicated for a student perhaps, but just like everything else, it becomes second nature if you practice it.

Hi, Carley.

I'm not quite sure how it's done in CC, but in digitalCAT, you would have to open the Commands window, click Add, and look for "Make Time."

I'm using Phoenix Theory, so I just write the numbers (/TWEFBL /THURT), stroke the Make Time stroke (/KHR-BG), and those numbers get converted to a time.

I'm fairly sure CC has something similar (though I don't believe it's numbers resolution, because at my former school, using that particular advanced feature was a Bad Thing™). You might want to check on a few forums looking for CC users that aren't using numbers resolution and are getting their times to appear correctly!

If you use the /T-M /T-M stroke you mentioned, that's an extra stroke you're throwing in there!

You want to avoid those extra strokes.
