Hey, Michael...
I got your message(s). LOL... Everything you've said is right on point, I know. I guess I just wanted an easier answer. I find myself, when I practice at a faster speed, wanting to get every word, so I find a way to brief all of the phrases and hard words. I must play the same dictation 50 times until I'm comfortable with it, then I feel that I can move on. I do know now that practicing at lower speeds for accuracy is hindering and irritating, so I'm just gonna push it and do what you said: Practice at faster speeds to get used to hearing it. Although that's irritating, too, especially when it's hard material. I can see why people want to through their machine and computer out of the window. How many words are actually in the English, French/English, etc. language that I don't know how to write on my machine? Don't answer that! I just feel like I know soooooooo much, yet I don't even know the half of it. omg. I need a drink. Help! Bye for now, Nikki

Hello, Michael. How did you practice at 20 words faster? Did you learn and practice how to shorten things at that point, or did you just write, using your theory and briefs that you already knew trying to get as much as you could? I understand that I need to train myself to hear faster, but writing is another story. I'm working on it, but it's so frustrating! Ugh!

Yeah, really am 50. . . actually 501/2 until July, at which time I will be officially 51!!! I am very active, and practice Brazilian Jui-Jitsu three times a week, and have been doing that for roughly six year. Know anything about that? Elise
ps get out to Miss much, my husband is Cajun.

Hi Michael, I am unfortunately not in the San Bernadino, but from San Jose. . . a little more north. But, I was born in San Bernadino, if that adds any kudos! Anyway, thanks for the compliment on my music. Where's yours? Elise
are you doing depos now, or in court?

Hello, Michael... You did give a lot of good advice already, but what I would like to know is how long it took you to become a court reporter, and how did you study / practice the art of machine writing? Did you practice mostly fast dictations to gain speed or accuracy writing to gain speed, or an equal amount of both? What type of material did you use for practice, and what do you think was more beneficial? Do you find that you are you still teaching yourself how to write different things in new ways, or have you, for the most part, mastered your writing? What kept/keeps you so driven, positive, and balanced?
Thanks soooooo much for your time. I know you must be so busy.

I just happened to be reading the side posts and noticed that you wanted to share your expertise with me. I went to your page, and found that the advice you gave to Javari was the best I've heard yet. I would like to welcome you as a friend of mine in hopes that you will accept. I'm working on 140 Q&A and Lit., and I'm working on 180 J.C. I'm at a place where I need to know exactly what to do to stay on track. So far, so good though, since I've only been in school for a year and a half. Hey, if you have time, any advice you have to give, I'll welcome.

Hi Michael,
Here's the link for the So Cal CSR Forum:

http://groups.msn.com/SoCalCSRForum

The group was formed and is headed by Marla Williams, CSR. The site's got lots of goodies, helpful info and input.
I will get pix up on my page. I've joined about four or five forums recently and I'll have to put some time aside and update all of my pages.
Hopefully, we will run into each other at the Anaheim convention. I've been reporting since '85, and I'm an RPR, CRR since '96 and started the RMR in '97, gave the test taking a break, and still have yet to pass that two-voice but I'm signing up for the Nov. testing.
Take care, Michael, and I hope to meet you in person at the convention.

Hey there, I tried those techniques that you let me know about and I passed the 160 jury that I had been trying to pass, and now tomorrow and Friday are test marathon and I am going to take advantage of some tests on those days also. Everything is starting to seem slow now I know I have these tests now.

Woah!!! that was amazing. It was like being there myself.LOL...I really believe that way is the best way. I am gonna start using that technique now. When I get an exam I am going to challenge them like come on give me something that I don't know. I am gonna do that tonight as a matter of fact. Thank you sooooo much for that.

Hi, and thank you for your advice. That is the most wonderful thing that I have ever heard or read. And my thing is the test anxiety nowa days. It is nerve racking and that is a thing that I seem not to get away from. Do you have any advice or exercises for this proble.

Hi, thank you for adding me. I am soo excited to get to talk to other court reporters and captioners. I only know like one court reporter, and she was the Dean for my old school, and now that I am attending a new school, I only know the students. I need sooo much help it isn't funny. I struggle, but I hold on tight for the next test you know? There is so much more to learn.

Hello Michael - aka SuperDad

I don't know how you do it! Single and four kids and this profession is a life full. Calling me sista is fine :) So you've migrated over to Case Catalyst 8. That's great. I used to be on Premier Power as well so I know where you're coming from. You will love Case Catalyst. It will make producing your transcripts a breeze. If you have any questions, I would be happy to help you out if I can. Yes, I'm here in this snowy, miserable, icy, freezing, frigid, horrifyingly cold Michigan and I hate it! You wouldn't think I've lived here all my life, but I have and I still hate winter. I should have moved to a warmer climate when I had the chance but I now I have to wait until I retire. Anyway, I haven't been on here lately because I'm buried in transcripts and have been in a four week criminal trial which I pray will end sometime this week. I decided to take a quick break -- which always leads to a hour or more once I'm on the internet. I sure wish I was in California right now. How is the weather there? I have never been there but will be visiting when I attend the national convention this summer. Well, back to work for me. Take care.

Hello Michael,
I'm glad you are in California. I am familiar with the area you live in. I have lived all over California. I plan to return after I finish school, it's too gloomy here.

No offense taken, I wasn't aware she was referring to you at first anyways.

I appreciate any advice from seasoned reporters.

So please don't hesitate! I hope you're having a wonderful day over on the West Coast of the U.S.

Thank you. I'm very proud of my degree from Tuskegee. I'm thinking of going for my MBA because I want to own a reporting firm, and why not have a MBA if it's going to make me more marketable? To answer your question, I don't have any kids. My age is nun uh....lol....I just had a birthday, I'm sure you can guesstimate. I've been hearing that word, "guesstimate" so much, it's such an odd word to me. Anyway, I go to Humphreys College and when I'm finished I plan to return to the Bay Area and start reporting on jobs or become an official. I'm not sure, I just may do both, while I'm still young with no obligations. Anyway, it's good to see a brotha in the field. Too bad the BCRA is no longer in existence.

I'm glad you enjoyed the tunes. I added some more music today. I do have a question but not about court reporting. I was wondering what is fastest typing speed for a regular typist?
