Depository and deposition location question...

I have an attorney friend who I have been trying to get as a client for awhile. He had his own office for awhile but is now back at a firm who does construction defect. He wants to use my services but needs to be able to access a depository and have the depositions at that location. Do any of you reporters with your own clients have any suggestions on how to accomodate that. Or agencies out there too. I know one way to handle it is to use an agency's depository and depo room and the client… Continue

Punctuation in Voice....

I have officially ended my third week in voice. We are now learning how to insert our punctuation into or material. I had no idea that we had to say punctuation as well while dictation.....you may be asking yourself how that is possible. Well for those of you who have had the pleasure of getting a taste of both worlds like myself (Steno and Voice) you have come to know that there are such things as "briefs". When you are doing voice and punctuation has come into play its a lot different than… Continue

detour through single mommyhood

So I've been doing the single parent gig this week. Man, it's a lot of work.

Kudos to all you moms and dads who do it on your own all the time.

So far, I've been working local and at decent hours w/attorneys who understand that a 12-hour depo does not a good reporter make. I've had local jobs, so even if we finished up late, I've been able to run over and pick up my daughter. I haven't had to call on the grandparents once.

However, that may change today since I… Continue

NCRA Public Advisory 45

I jumped over here to see what discussions I might be missing on this subject, and there was none. Shoot. I guess I'll get the ball rolling.

Is scoping work easy or difficult to find?

I am a medical transcriptionist, formerly trained in court reporting and retraining again now. I am looking for some extra work to do from my home and am considering a scoping course. Can any of the scopist out there tell me how well they have fared in this profession? Is there much demand?

Airplane Crash in New York City.

When I came out of court today, I heard about this airplane crash in the Hudson River. Living in New York, I'm not a stranger to airplanes crashing. Of course, I couldn't help to think back to 9/11. My spirits rose to hear that everyone survived and bravo to the pilot and crew of that airplane, they did a great job! Also, bravo to the passengers who didn't panic and trample each other.

Although, it's a shame a perfectly good airplane is lost, it's not a shame that we have skilled… Continue

To Depo Firms Everywhere

Times have changed. It's time to get rid of your ridiculous cover sheet formats that were designed for typewriters and come up with a standard deposition cover page format, including appearance and index page, certs, etc., that all freelance reporters can know and use. Yes, you should all be the same! Who cares if you don't number the first page? Who cares if you leave the line numbers off the first page? Come on! Give us one good format. Freelancers are having to work for multiple firms now,… Continue

My First Week in Voice writing

My first week I have to admit was pretty boring!!!! just alot of breathing excercises and learning how to develop your tone. For voice writing we have to keep our voices inaudible and very monotone(robotic like) really weird when you play it back. I caught on naturally, they say I have found my calling.(smile)

Dictionary

I know. I know. It's the 21st century and I should be looking up everything online. But there are certain words that I just can't remember, like X ray, X-ray, and x-ray so I always go to my trusty dictionary and look it up. Actually, I've marked the spot.

I suppose I could look it up online. And I'm sure the answer would be right. But once in a while, what's on the Internet sometimes isn't right. (I know. Fancy that.)

I also like having a dictionary that I can just go and… Continue

Positive spin on a crappy depo

Well, you know, you have those days when the attorney is a motor mouth. When things are just flying. (Yes, I did tell him to slow down. Another one of those attorneys who can't help themselves.) On those days, I go home feeling quite beat down. It's a hard job. You just hate going back over the job bec. you know you'll have to fix so many untranslates.

Well, one way to look at it is you're dictionary building. This is your chance to add another hundred words to your dictionary. This… Continue

Stuck at 200 words per minute.

I got stuck at 180 and the only thing that got me through was going to court and sitting in for a week or two and just trying as hard as I could to keep up. Then I passed my 180's.

Make it rain.

So I'm taking this depo. And the term "make it rain" comes up.

Do you know what it means?
