I used to have that conflict.  I only write the -D as had in a phrase, but I do the whole thing - HAD is had.  Forgot the phrases years ago and usually write it out.

I just changed a bunch of my phrases to incorporate the H (had) at the beginning.  Now I'm really going to screw up.  Hopefully, it will be a quick-and-easy transition.

Initial H here too.  Great for phrasing.

Yeah, Quyen, for some reason I can't think of an example of when had comes up by itself either :)  I'm sure it does, though!  Isn't if funny how we know we questions about how things happen but then can't think of a specific example ~ things like that happen to me all the time!!  But I do/would use the initial H.

Stacy, I have those same strokes too.  I'll have to wait until a specific example comes up where I'm having a conflict with -D for "had" by itself.  I guess the easy solution would be for me to do the dumb thing, too, and do H for "had."  ;)

HU*FRB = had you ever been

SRU*FRD = have you ever had

and Christi's just a pain  (LOL!!  She knows I love her so I can say that!!)

I write "had" like -D.  How do you guys write "had you ever been" or such phrases where had is either at the beginning or end of the phrase?

Comment by Cindy Boedy on August 1, 2011 at 15:21

Stacy, I'll be dumb with you - I write had as H too!

All in fun, Christi, as all your HAHAs indicate! :)

Hey, you ~ Eclipse rocks ~ so there :P

I actually don't think I ever write just H, though ~ isn't "had" always with a phrase??  either in front or behind? (oh, God, I'm just giving you ammunition, huh?)

I write had by itself H-.  In a phrase I use -D, but haven't noticed conflicts with the -ed I don't think.
