I'm rereading The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. Just about finished with the second one.
Please don't let this deter you, but they are about vampires, witches and daemons living among us. These are not horror books, or like The Twilight Saga (all of which I enjoy), but they're more historical. I can't go into detail without giving too much away, but it's originally set in Oxford and although there are a lot, and I do mean a lot, of characters, the books are centered on Dianna and Matthew. Both are of above average intelligence, and neither are human. It's taking me longer to read them this go around because I constantly find myself Googling images of real settings from the novel, as well as trying to decipher some of the old language used.
They are quite good and as we speak (type) the television series is being filmed! I'm so excited. It's doubtful the show will be as good as the books, but my hope is that because it's not a movie, they will have more time to devote to being as accurate as possible. The author is heavily involved in the project as well, so that's a bonus.
The first book starts in September and every year fans from all over the world do a real time reading together. A companion book is coming out soon, and there are of course Wikis, book guides and all sorts of stuff.
These books are a few steps above mind candy (see above re Googling) but well worth the read. That said, I also love some mind candy! Having gotten a BA in English with a minor in American Studies quite a few years ago I had to read TONS of books, some more than once, and since then I've been on a steady diet of non-classics/low brow literature. It helped that I worked in bookstores and got discounts. :)
Happy reading and happy weekend.
Monnie/Chelsea, I also forgot to mention that I grew up reading Anne of Green Gables. I can't count the number of times that I've read them! Has anyone watched the new adaptations? I can't bear to because I love the original adaption so much!
Chelsea, It is hard to find a good classic! I love Jane Eyre! Wilkie Collins (The Moonstone and The Lady in White) is one of my favorite authors!I love using Goodreads to find new books to read. My to-read list is out of control!
I love using Goodreads to find new books to read. My to-read list on there is out of control!
Rebecca, you are SO not alone in reading the classics! I remember getting really into them in 8th grade because my math class was really awful (kids essentially ran the class into the ground and tricked the teacher into one day of teaching, three days of "checking homework/asking questions." Which means I read for 3-4 math classes a week). Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all time. I haven't read a really good one in a long while, though.
Fantasy, yess!! Love that stuff. I should have a bit more time on my hands in the near future, so I'm hoping to tackle the books. I'm a huge fangirl of the show.
I've been a part of this group for a while, but I kept putting off posting because I wanted to wait till I was reading a really cool book or something. Since that hasn't happened, I'm just going to post anyway. ;)
I'm currently reading The Vicomte de Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas. This is a book in the series D'Artagnan Romances. The first book in the series is The Three Musketeers. I loved the first book, and I've been enjoying the rest of the series. Am I the only one who enjoys reading classics?
Chelsea, I haven't watched Game of Thrones, but it's been on my to-read list for a long time! As much as I love classics, fantasy is my preferred genre.
Monnie, one of the very first books I remember reading was the Little House on the Prairie books! I remember nothing of Anne of Green Gables, though I do remember reading it for school in first or second grade. I should reread them again! I'm still waiting until I have some free time to dive head first into the Song of Ice and Fire books! I'm a huge fan of the show and have started the first book about three times. They're so stinking long, though, I always end up getting flooded with work and haven't finished it yet.
I am currently reading the Anne of Green Gables series for the first time. I can't believe I never read it when I was a child, given how much I loved the Little House on the Prairie books. It's such a lovely series, and a refreshing palate cleanser, given everything going on in the world today.
On a completely different note, the book I read just before AoGG was American Gods, by Neil Gaiman. It was my second time reading it, and for some reason I liked it a lot more this time around. I was wanting to reread it before I watched the first season of the tv series on which it's based, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I got out of it.
Trying to decide what series I should pick up in my spare time...A Song of Ice and Fire or The Dark Tower? Decisions, decisions....
Currently reading The Law of Attraction in Action by Deanna Davis. It's a more down-to-earth approach to the law of attraction as introduced in the popular book/movie The Secret. Really enjoying it so far and putting it into practice.
If anyone’s a fan of Jane Austen, I’ve just picked up historian Lucy Worsley’s new book Jane Austen at Home. So far, it’s an intriguing read that’s dismantling the idea of Jane Austen as a retiring spinster and showing the myriad life experiences (including several flirtations!) that shaped her novels. A must-read for any JA fan or for my fellow Anglophiles! For those of you who have children or who like children’s fiction, I can also highly recommend her two novels Eliza Rose and My Name is Victoria.
