Hey Courtney, thanks for visiting our Procedures class at Chatt.State this past summer. You did a great job.

Thank you for the info.

It is very helpful to talk to someone in the field.

Congrats with your 4-month-old.

Happy Captioning!

Hi, Courtney. I have been working as a CART provider for four years and I would like to make the transition to Broadcast Captioning. Where did you get your captioning start?

Courtney, you are amazing. Thanks for such detail and for responding so quickly. I'd love to get more info. and talk more. I'm sure I won't be fully focused on this until after Christmas and New Year's but I want to give it serious consideration if it's something I can do...although, as I'm typing this, my wrist is killing me...sign of the old tendonitis? I hope not. I'm on the computer so much already with just regular surfing stuff so why not use these hands again to make some extra cash from home with a skill I really enjoyed using? Just gotta see which is better for me, investing in re-schooling to build it all back up and become even more conflict free than I was or just scoping/proofing without the pressure of the verbatim. It may come down to the financial differences and out-of-pocket expenses. Anyway, I'm thinking out loud on your blog. Sorry about that. Thanks again and I'll be in touch soon.
God bless you!

Hello, Courtney~
I enjoyed your willingness to answer questions so thought I'd pick your brain if you're willing.
I'm a former reporter and have always thought about going back and becoming a captioner. I was an RPR with two legs of the CMR when I quit reporting to homeschool my kids. I worked on XScribe and wrote with 98.7% - 99.2% accuracy consistently. Writing on the machine was always my forte' and favorite so since captioning doesn't involve the hours transcribing and proofing, I'm intrigued.
Do you work from home? If not, how and where do you work? Are there agencies strictly for captioning? I read they are paid hourly. Do certain types of programs pay more? Finally, are there programs online or elsewhere that allow me to build up my speed listening to recordings (used to be tapes) or just sitting in front of the news and then testing? Share with me as much as you're willing to and I'll be grateful for your response. Thanks!

Thanks! Congratulations to you too! Thanks for the info. I went on the NCRA Web site and read some of the captioning articles. Right now, it seems like a lot to make that transition and since this is my first, I have baby-on-the-brain and not much more. I am going to still do some research and keep it in mind in the future.

Hi Courtney,

I'm currently a freelance reporter looking into possibly switching to captioning. I love reporting, but I am pregnant with my first child and due in April. I was hoping to do work at home after a few months off after delivery and captioning is starting to look like the route I should go in. I am currently on Eclipse too. I don't think I would be up for the crazy hours of live broadcast captioning with a newborn. Is there a lot of work for captioning taped shows?

I would enjoy that but I live an hour from chattanooga. Maybe sometime when I'm have time I'll talk to Katie and maybe I could come with her. Thanks againg for the info. I wil keep in touch now that my computers fixed.
