CAN YOU RELATE?

The United Nations had a visitor last week who is an acknowledged mass murderer and terrorist responsible for the deaths of thousands, including many students onboard the Lockerbee. His name is Moammar Khadafy, spelled many different ways, oil rich and a rambler par excellence. During his 96 minute torturous, no pun intended, speech, the official UN interpreter raised his hands imploring mercy and said, "I can't take it anymore!" His speech apparently was rather extemporaneous, including… Continue

Eclipse Editing Training

Eclipse scopists and reporters-

At the Indiana Shorthand Reporters Association convention last weekend, I met a local (Indianapolis area) reporter who is also an Eclipse rep/trainer. I asked her about classes for the edit station, just to get more fluent in navigating using the Hyperkeys and Eclipse general editing Q&A. She is willing to put a class together if 4 or 5 folks are interested.

Here are the basics. The charge would be $50 a person for 3 hours, which I think… Continue

Looking for a StenoCAT32 reporter

Our firm had a writer ten years ago who was on StenoCAT32 but is no longer w/the firm and we can't locate her. We have a transcript ordered that looks to have been completed on her software, but we can't get it open on any of our current software systems. Does anybody out there have any suggestions on how to get this file opened?

The Power of Thank You

Got up at 3:00 a.m. yesterday, took a cab to the Austin airport, 6:30 flight to St. Louis, drove a rental car two and a half hours in the pouring rain to teach Eclipse software to some future court reporters in Southern Illinois. Usually when it's raining, students don't show up, but they were there.

At the end of my class, they presented me with a thank-you card that they'd all signed and a Starbucks gift card. I've been doing this sort of thing at schools near and far for free for… Continue

HELP -- Eager to Get Started!

I am in the process of starting my business and just need to know the average rates for scoping, transcription, proofing and editing. Maybe someone can provide me with some pointers as well as a sample rate sheet with all these services broken down individually. I would also like some advice on software such as the most popular as well as where to buy used vs. new, etc. I am in the Birmingham, AL area. Thanks to all!

Priceless Moment

My daughter has been dreaming of getting a Mustang. She knows every body style of the Mustang from 1965 until now. She's getting her license next week, and I've been searching for a used car for her for a month. I kept trying to steer her away from Mustangs since they're more expensive. I kept showing her car after car, and she didn't like any of them. She finally got to the point where she was ready to get a Hyundai. We saw one yesterday, but the lot was closed. I planned to go there today to… Continue

Moving on....

Moving right along with Lesson 4. I hope to be finished with it in the next day or so. I have covered the theory for it, now putting the fingers into motion.

What I wish I knew my second year as a court reporter - scopists

Scopists are here to make your life easier. There are good scopists out there and bad.

Scopists see all sorts of writers. Don't worry if your transcript is horrible, unless it is horrible on a consistent basis. Then worry. But seriously, scopists are not here to judge how good or bad a writer you are. If you are a truly horrible writer, they will either refuse to take work from you or charge you an arm an a leg.

I don't care what they say. Everyone has drops, except for… Continue

Stacking Resolution Suggestions Please

Hi, all,

I have been trying for months (or longer) to resolve two stacking issues that keep coming up over and over again, so I thought I'd ask the many experts on the Nation for help.

My brief for "that have" is tha-f. It endlessly comes out as "of that". The other one is "that had". My brief is tha-d. If I write "you mentioned that" in steno, it two-thirds of the time comes out to be "you mention that had".

Any suggestions on different… Continue

Question Regarding "ish"

Okay, I feel odd writing this but I looked around and never found the answer so I'm hoping for some feedback.

I was doing a proof and a doctor answered low-averagish intellect before the accident. Wouldn't that be low-average-ish before the accident; or low average-ish before the accident? I was wondering why it was written as such, I know "ish" is a common term in pop culture lingo but I was a bit thrown off that a doctor used it in that manner. I marked it for the reporter… Continue

Feel the Burn!

I quit smoking cigarettes February 16, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. Since that time, I have gained a lot of weight in less than two years. To add insult to injury, I have been busier than I have ever been in my job, especially since the Obama administration got in, resulting in many hours being sedentary.

I knew I was in trouble, though, this past week when my feet got so swollen from sitting in one position for so many hours. I could hardly walk.

Years ago, when I was younger, I… Continue
