Any Advice for a Newbie?

My last day at my current job is today. It is a little scary -- I have been here for almost 3.5 years and am familiar with my surroundings here. They have been so supportive of me throughout my schooling and were incredibly accommodating when I did my internship. I have been lucky to work here with the people I have been associated with.

However, I am SO EXCITED to dive into this crazy world of being a working court reporter! I have a fabulous agency that I interned with that is… Continue

Tiny Hero Steers Mom to Safe Stop

I saw this incredible news story and couldn't resist passing it along here. A Philadelphia 8-year-old is being called a hero after he helped his pregnant mother, who lost the ability to see while driving, steer her car through a mile of traffic intersections until he could find a safe place for her to stop. I imagine she felt a lot like the blind man in the picture. Click here to see… Continue

Question for California Reporters on "marking" a portion of a transcript

I have had a California attorney say on the record, "I want that marked." I would appreciate input from any California reporters. Do you just indicate it on your index page? It wasn't a question. It was actually a little dust-up between the attorneys. Please give me your advice.
Thanks,
Janiece

International Literacy Day

I received an e-mail from Blog Catalog today informing me of the upcoming International Literacy Day on September 8th and giving me the opportunity to unite with other bloggers to support this important day.

I wanted to pass this information along as I have personally worked with someone who was held back on his job and providing for his family due to his inability to read the necessary paperwork and forms required for a promotion. Plus, I thought that we, as wordsmiths, particularly… Continue

Deciding School-Need Help

Hello,

My name is Sherrelle Johnson and I'm a newbie to scoping. I am currently enrolled in 2 scopist trainings; 1) is an online program -Scoping Made Affordable 2) Cerritos Community College. The second one is a traditional Court reporting school that offers scopist training as well as a certificate upon completion. I decided to enroll in both institutions because I wanted to make sure I was getting as much info and knowledge as possible. So that when I complete the training, I would be a… Continue

Help!!

I started court reporting school exactly 1 year ago and I only have one year left. I use to be able to write at 120 words per min easily and now I can barely write 100 without struggling. I have a part time job as a teller and they are really pushing me to work a lot more so I think thats really interfering with my practice. Also my boyfriend just started going to college again so I'm trying to get use to the swing of things. Is there any advice that I can get as to what I can do to get myself… Continue

Latin term?

Hey everyone,
Hopefully this is a really easy question. I had this term come up in a workers' comp depo. The doctor was a part of a panel -- sounds like cue ami. I can't seem to find this term anywhere. Sad things is, I've had this term come up before and had an exhibit for the spelling but I don't seem to be able to recall. Can anyone help me out?

TECH QUESTION: "If a popcorn kernel trapped between the cpu fan and the processor pops....

what damage could it have caused? I don't know how it got there."

This thought-provoking question was sent to my online computer expert, Leo Notenboom at Ask Leo, and he passed it on in his weekly e-mail letter. I couldn't resist passing it along here.

TECH ANSWER: (from Leo) "What's funny is that this could happen, and the kernel could absolutely pop at some point -… Continue

Case Catalyst/new laptop??? Any suggestions??

The day has come, unfortunately. Screen on laptop was shaking at depo yesterday. This morning it is BLACK. Ugh. I'm frantic, of course.

This morning, I backed Catalyst files on external hard drive before screen went completely black. Now I tried to put my CC version (old....Version 4!!!) on an HP I had here as a backup (yeah, right) that has Windows Vista, I guess. Well, it's giving me some junk that it can't install because of a driver, etc, and to contact the "manufacturer." So now I've… Continue

Another Day in the Life - Blackouts

So we're going merrily along and all of a sudden the lights go out. Darn it!! Long story short, there was a black out.

I have recently had my writer shimmed and made paperless. Also, I have a Stentura 8000. The battery is shot. I always run on electricity. I got it refurbished about a year ago, but then it ran down again and will no longer hold a charge.

So basically, I had about 2.5 hours on my laptop. I think there were batteries in my digital recorder, but I could not… Continue

Keeping busy and loving CSRnation!

The past few weeks have been pretty slow for me. I am so thankful for the last minute jobs that get handed to me through the agency I work for.

Transcript orders are a-plenty. I've gotten five orders in the last few days. Yay! So even though I should be working, I need to take a couple minutes for myself and my favorite website.

I'm thinking about working in criminal/juvenile/ dependency court again. It's just such a pain in my rear to work all day in court and then have… Continue

Student Inquiry--Dictionary Size?

Hi,

I'm new to the group, but wanted to ask all the working court reporters and captioners, how big is your dictionary? I'm building mine, but just wanted to get an idea.

Thanks,
Chris

My First 225!

I passed!! I passed my first 225! 96.08%. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Just two tests left and then I'll be out there as a working court reporter!!!

There is no better encouragement than passing a test. I have class tonight and hope that I do well, but if I don't pass tonight...I will be practicing SO hard this weekend! Woo!
