Okay. I just finished "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, her first novel.  It is a must read.  The movie by the same name will be out later this year, as I understand.

Okay.  I confess I'm reading an action thriller.  I stumbled on a book by Lee Child called 61 Hours, and I enjoyed it so much I requested the first book in the series from my library and I'm halfway through it.

If you like a pretty quick read with some suspense and just a touch of romance, give it a try.  Yes, there is violence, but it's not a horror book.

I just finished Stephen King's new book, Under the Dome. I have to say, I gave up on King many years ago, but boy, this one really hooked me. I couldn't put it down. What a look into human nature...highly recommended.

And I read all 1,000 pages on my new Kindle 2 I received for Christmas. I wasn't really interested in the e-books at all, but I LOVE it! It can do all sorts of cool things, including text-to-speech for those so inclined. After just 2 weeks, I'm a convert. And it could become addictive :).

Just finished the audio of "Texas Rich" by Fern Michaels. This was recommended by my mom, who loves audio books. I'm a booklover & this was my first time listening to one! It took some getting used to but after a few tracks I was hooked. This was the story of a young naive woman named Billie who fell in love with a Texas scion of the wealthy Coleman family. With the behind-the-scenes manipulation of her mother she marries into the family, tries to find her place in this very different world, with her father in-law her biggest enemy. This is a multigenerational saga that includes Billie's children & grandchildren. I won't give away too much information but its got some surprising twists. And being from Texas I was particularly fond of this story & its author. And now that I'm turned on to audio books I'm going to look for more! But I'll never grow tired of actual book reading!!!

At Cynthia Cathcart's suggestion, I just started "Women Who Run With the Wolves -- Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype" by C.P. Estes. It was published in 1992 and I've seen it on several friends' shelves in the past decade but haven't got 'round to reading it until Cynthia's urging now. I'll give a synopsis later. It might be MUCH later because this reading will be fit into, you know, daily life extrania and The Holidays! Not a light read, more like food for contemplation of various story imagery regarding the natural and deep female psyche.

Has anyone read Cormac McCarthy's latest work "Let the Great World Spin" and what was your reaction if so?

I read "Dreams of My Father" (mentioned below) a year ago in the run up to Pres. Obama's inauguration and also found it well-written and informative.

Thanks, Kimberly, for the tip on paperbackswap.com!!! and the two books you mentioned.

The Shack was very popular here in Oregon about a year ago. The author is local and actually visited our church. It's an amazing story on how this book came to be. So glad to hear it is still going strong. I just started reading "Sweet Caroline" which is Caroline Kennedy's book. Very interesting and it grabs you on the first page. I have also joined Paperbackswap.com It's a very inexpensive way to get used books. Happy reading!

Hi everyone! Glad to find this group! I've always been an avid reader (books, magazines, newspapers, even encyclopedias!) so its always nice to connect with other readers like myself. =) I don't have much time to read as I'd like to though. And I'm currently not reading anything (except People magazine). However, the last book I read was "The Shack" by William Young. My mother & I both read this one a couple of months ago. Not sure if anyone here has heard of it but its been very popular here in my area (Dallas/Ft Worth). Its more or less a spiritual book...tells the story about a father's inner struggle with his faith in God, his perception of religion & values, after his young daughter is kidnapped & brutally murdered. The book asks the universal question...why do bad things happen to the good & the innocent? I cried with anger & sorrow throughout the read. I also laughed at parts because Mr. Young can be a very funny storyteller & his character descriptions are spot-on. As a parent & a Christian this book really touched home. And I had never heard of it until a customer at Walmart recommended it to me! Then I told my mom about it & she spread the news at the beauty shop, etc., etc. My personal review is that this book was enlightening. It was hard to read at points but overall I truly enjoyed it.

And books on tape...thats something I have yet to experience. My mother used to travel for her job & she would always have books on tape to listen to during the long commutes. She doesn't really travel that much anymore but she still prefers listening to actually reading! I just don't know if I could really "get into it" or not?

Sorry this was so long!! Thanks for accepting me into the group! =D

Hi All - I just finished reading Weekends at Bellvue by Julie Holland, M.D. She's a psychiatrist who took weekend shifts at the emergency room for psych patients at Bellvue. If you ever feel like you're going a little crazy at times, read this and you'll feel better. Holland is quirky, funny, and insightful--probably good traits for the job--and the book makes for laser fast reading.

Thanks, Carilyn, for those two books on tape. I like to listen to books on tape while I walk and those sound like two very good ones. I'll hope my library has them. Interesting topics. I'm looking forward to listening. Keeps me motivated to walk....

Hello Friends,

Recently I've been "reading" books by listening to audio CD books borrowed from the library. Here are two books that come unabridged in audio...

How Doctors Think, by Jerome Groupman, M.D. - a book about how doctors misdiagnose patients, by cognitive errors of human nature. "Splendid and courageous... Groupman lifts the veil on the most taboo topic... the pervasive nature of misdiagnosis." Very honest explanations, with interesting stories to illustrate.

The Age of Turbulence - by Alan Greenspan - macro Economics of the USA and the world. Greenspan's book is not dry. It tells his story in chronological order... and he is refreshingly humble for a man of his intellect.
