What's the furthest you've driven?

Well, times are slow for some of us and gas is high. Although it has come down a little bit. Just a smidge.

But what's the furthest you've driven for a depo? Timewise? Mileagewise?

I used to try to keep it around 30 miles, but I think I"ll have to bump it up to 40. Bleh. And that could end up being anywhere from and hour to two hours depending on traffic. Double Bleh.

When I first started, I drove to Palm Springs once for a depo. That was over a hundred miles… Continue

Snagging music!!!

OMG. I learn great and wonderful things about this site everyday. Did you know that if you like a song on someone else's page, you can add it to your page? I did not know that.

It is so coool!!! I will probably spend the day visiting people and listening to their music. Hope you all don't mind.

This is why this is such a cool site.

THANKS, MONTI!!!!

Who likes it hot and spicy?

Now, that I've got your attention. I'm talking food again. Indian food this time. There are some really good Indian places around SoCal. The thing about Indian food is that they have those really great buffets. I always overeat.

One of my top favorite Indian food places is Natraj in Laguna Hills. My girlfriend who is Indian says this place is very good. Their kheer (rice pudding) is delicious. I'm not sure if the fast food Natraj is owned by the same people. They're kind of the… Continue

Sushi Lovers Unite!!

It has recently come to my attention that there are some people on this board who love sushi. I LOVE SUSHI.

Since we're usually driving all over the place for our depos, it would be nice to get recommendations for good sushi places all over Southern California, so if we happen to find ourselves somewhere, we will be able to eat there with confidence.

In Costa Mesa/Santa Ana, CA, off of Bristol there is a place called Kaisen Kaiten sushi. Kaiten basically means conveyor… Continue

Stricken from the record/strike that.

What does that phrase really mean? Is it just something attorneys randomly say when they flub their questions and they want a fresh new start? Probably.

As a depo reporter, it just means another two words that I have to stroke. It's not like I'm actually going to delete it out. It still goes into the record and stays in the record permanently.

Digression - I've had witnesses, when the attorney keeps saying strike that, start saying strike that in the mistaken belief that… Continue

How things have changed since I've been working in court.

Writing - Well, it may be a little premature, and I'm sure my writing will change even more more, but I've added a lot of stuff to my writing. Lots of briefs and court-related phrases. But I'm finding that the briefs that I'm adding to my dictionary are really helping when I take depos.

I don't know if depos are getting easier for me or they're easier in comparison to courtroom proceedings.

It's funny but I've been going out fewer days as well. Not just bec. of the… Continue

What would you save?

Well, I had a court reporter nightmare the other night. Of course, one of those that doesn't make sense involving a logging camp and taking a deposition in a tent. Anyway, for reasons that make sense in my dream, we had to evacuate bec. it was going to blow up. I took off with my laptop, but I was debating whether I should go back for my writer.

And it started me thinking. I often take depositions in high rises. In fact, I've been in a building when the alarm goes off. If this… Continue

Overturn Prop 8

I am saddened that Prop 8 passed, which bans gay marriages.

It's raining, it's pouring.

I live in sunny Southern California, and for the last few days, it's been a little wet. However, I love rainy weather. It's a nice change od pace. That plus the falling back is really marking the change of season for me. I really like working at home when it's raining.

How's the weather in your neck of the woods? Have you guys noticed any difference sine the globe started warming up and the ozone layer started dissipating?

Non-court related random musings.

Well, Saturday is shopping and chore day.

Today we went to Costco. I foresee Costco becoming every busy in the coming weeks as everyone looks for bargains.

Anyway, when I was in the dried fruit aisle, I saw dried apricots and dried cranberries and prunes. But they are no longer called prunes. They are now labeled dried plums.

I find this particularly funny because just a couple of weeks ago, I was in the fresh fruit section of Costco and I saw a box of plums… Continue

Huge learning curve

There is always news thing you can learn in this profession, whether you want to or not.

There is a huge learning curve for me right now going into the courts. And I despair of ever getting better. It's like starting all over again from my first year out as a reporter. It's learning about new formats, new parentheticals, new forms, new administrative details. So much to learn and so little time. I really don't know how full-time officials make it their first year. I only work in… Continue

Halloween Fears - not related to court reporting

Well, it's Halloween. I usually try not to take jobs around holidays. Why? If you've visited my page, you know I have a little girl. And Halloween is one of those days you kind of have to knock off early, pick your kid up from school, caregiver, whoever and take them trick-or-treating. If I take a job, it's usually the attorney who doesn't have a kid (bec. the one's with kids have the same problems I do & they need to go home & take their kid out) and they go on forever. There's no… Continue

Paperwork!!!

Well, working in the Federal court is definitely a government job. Lots of paperwork.

Have you guys ever watched Office Space? Well, I feel like I spent my day doing TPS reports. Whoo-hooo.

I had to fill out the G-46 and G-11 because I screwed up filling out the G-46. In order to get paid for the criminal appeal transcript, I have to fill out the CJA-24.

And, yeah, by the way, all the forms are online. Nope. They're not. And if they are, there's no directions on… Continue

Show me the money!!!!

Okay. If you're trying to hide your head in the sand and say the economy is great and you're doing just as much business this year as last year. That's awesome for you. Maybe you're doing more. Good for you!! Stop being so selfish and share the wealth. Send me a job already.

However, my gut feeling is that reporters are seeing more cancellations, more settlements just before you get the transcript in. Insurance agencies are telling the attorney, hold off on that depo, settle that… Continue

Where's Jack? Daniel, that is.

A few months ago I wrote about a new court reporting school that is opening up in the West Los Angeles area.

Here is a brochure with some pricing.

I think many of you know Jack and were wondering where she was after she got bought out by Gallo.

An official Jack Daniel sighting here.

Attorneys are psychic

I swear attorneys can smell when you're going on vacation. They immediately expedite any and all transcripts. It's gotten to the point that the week before I go on vacation, I always ask the agency to see if they can find out if the attorney is going to want an expedite.

You'd think you could take a couple of days the week before and send the transcript off to the scopist and work on it when you get back. Especially if you're only taking a week. I mean, you've technically got two… Continue

Hey, it's slow out there and I don't have transcripts.

Got you!!! You thought this was going to be another, oh, no, the economy is in the dumps story or I need work story. Nope. I want to be more positive than that.

It is slow out there. I don't know why. I don't know when it's going to pick up. Probably right around the holidays when you are buried under festive events that you have to go to or make huge meals for.

But in the meantime, you're wondering, what do I do? Enjoy your time off. Go catch a movie. Get your Christmas… Continue

Scary day on the job

So I'm in court. You may not know this, but unlike Superior Court, Federal Court does not have bailiffs or deputies in the courtroom.

So I'm writing away. We're doing calendar stuff. We're on the record. The clerk is reading off the case number and the attorneys are about to come up to introduce themselves. And I'm concentrating for all I'm worth bec. usually this is probably the only time that the attorneys will introduce themselves and you will have no way of knowing who is who… Continue

More Federal follies

Well, yesterday was a fun day for me. Not!!

I forgot to turn my mike on for the first hearing. Bleh.

Then I got a call at lunch asking where's that rough? Well, I e-mailed it to you on Friday. Haul my laptop down to the jury room to see if I can find some wi-fi to send in the rough. Unable to get wi-fi hooked up. Double check my e-mail sent box, yes, did send it in. Asked agency to double check their inbox. Yes, they did have it.

Hauled my laptop back up to the… Continue

Update Federal pro tem

Well, I became a pro tem for the Federal court just a few short months ago. If you've read any of my blogs, you know the first few times were very hairy. But I've produced a transcript from one of my days.

I've also learned a lot of new stuff. The problem is there is no formal training program. They kind of throw you in there and expect you to swim. There have been a couple of reporters who have been helping me out with the administrative end of things. Thank goodness.

As… Continue
