I recently tried Gnarly Wine and the Zin is a great bargain under $10.00.  It actually compares favorably  to an Amarone I had recently at 6 times the price, but it should be noted that wine is a truly subjective experience.  The wine  is deep purple in color, 14.5 alcohol, and is perfect especially for cold New York wintry nights or after a long day of waiting for the phone to ring for work!  Only kidding, but not!

and it had a cork - the new plastic variety.

Janiece,

the wine you tried and loved Gewurztraminer from the Fetzer winery , is one of my favorites!!  great by itself and goes with most things!!!

Try shopping at World Market for wine.  They've got an amazing selection, decent prices, and the salespeople KNOW their wine and can make good recommendations!!

I was there before Christmas and bought three or four bottles of wine for gifts.  I bought this one bottle of wine because I liked the blue color of the bottle.  and it looked nice.  it is Joseph Handler Riesling 2009, Germany Pfalz.  My parents brought over some pork (which we cooked and had with salad)  this wine went

G-R-E-A-T with the pork.  Best wine I ever tasted!!!  of course it was the food pairing.  when i drank the leftover wine later that evening without food, it wasn't quite as good as it was with dinner/food!

but with pork, I recommend Joseph Handler Riesling 2009  Germany Pfalz

absolutely perfect on the palate!!

Report back.  Always curious to see what people like and don't like.   Enjoy your corkscrew and recycle your corks!

Marge, I live in the KC area and we just got Trader Joe's in town this past summer.  I will have to give your recommendation a try now that I finally have a corkscrew.  (haha)  Thanks for the tip. :-)

I'm a wine idiot and prefer things like Fuzzy Navels and Mudslides (also love Dubonnet and ouzo).  However, here's a red wine that I really like:  Trader Joe Charles Shaw blend Cabernet Sauvignon (2009 California).      And, Janiece, it has a cork (hahaha!!)

BTW, speaking of corks:

ALL WHOLE FOODS STORES TO RECYCLE WINE CORKS

http://earth911.com/news/2010/04/07/all-whole-foods-stores-to-recyc...

Whole Foods Market announced on April 6 that it is implementing a company-wide wine cork recycling program that will be available throughout its 292 store locations in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In partnership with Cork ReHarvest, Whole Foods will set up designated drop boxes for recycling wine corks in its stores. According to a press release, an estimated 13 billion wine cork are produced each year.

“We often forget that cork is a renewable, recyclable material that does not belong in our landfills,” says Erez Klein, wine and beer buyer for Whole Foods Market’s Pacific Northwest Region.

“Whole Foods Market is excited to make cork recycling more accessible to our shoppers, and Cork ReHarvest allows us to help sustain cork forests, a critically important resource for our planet, and to do so with near effortless local community action.”

According to the World Wildlife Fund, Mediterranean oak forests that supply cork support one of the world’s highest levels of forest biodiversity and the second-highest number of plant species in the world.

Not a single tree, which can live up to 300 years, is cut down during cork extraction; instead, bark is harvested by hand every nine to 12 years.

Recycling cork from wine bottles can help lessen the pressure to harvest too quickly, because existing cork – in the form of wine closures or stoppers, for example – reduces the need to use virgin resources to fashion other cork-made goods.

The corks collected for recycling at Whole Foods locations will be made into post-consumer products.

“By launching this company-wide recycling effort, Whole Foods Market is demonstrating its commitment to its green mission,” says Patrick Spencer, director of Cork ReHarvest.

Similar initiatives for recycling wine corks have been gaining momentum over the past couple of years. Last August, American Airlines partnered with ReCORK America to recycle its corks produced from its Admiral Club Lounges.

ReCORK also teamed up with Whole Foods in 2008 for a pilot wine cork recycling program for 25 locations throughout northern California and Reno, Nev.

I admit I am not sophisticated when it comes to wine.  I need to take a class on wine.  But last night I had Gewurztraminer from the Fetzer winery and I really loved it.  I may even start drinking wines that have a cork, LOL!!!

Roger, I can recommend 2007 A to Z Riesling for Thanksgiving. I tried it with turkey the other day and it went very well. I'm not a big merlot drinker. I couldn't tell you a good year even. You could always research regions and years and start there. Cheers!

Looking for a recommendation on a white for the succulent Thanksgiving turkey and I guess I should also put on the table a red for the "dark " meat, eh?

Anyone up on Four Grapes Port? I had a bit a taste a weekend or so ago, pretty good.

Anyone have a recommendation for a great merlot that might be available at Trader Joe's? I've noticed lately they are carrying a lot of wines from various vineyards not only in the Pacific NW and California but South American and Africa, Spain, Portugual and many many others.
