I was looking into doing school by myself with CRAH before I found a local tutoring program that an agency was starting up. I was so happy when I was able to join in. There are six of us now, and it is really nice to be able to see other people twice a week (we're part-time) that know what you're going through. And you're right, Kate, it is nice to be able to be critiqued, and Angela is so right about the camaraderie and competition. It really isn't a "competition" in the usual sense of the word, but I always feel a little more push to practice when someone else is sneaking up behind me in speed. It is a great motivator! We love to exchange briefs and practice tips, too, and it is helpful to be able to "see" into how someone else writes by sharing. Having a great teacher really helps, too. Our teacher is a retired reporter and she does SO much for us, it is insane. She really is doing this to help us and for the feature of the profession, which is a great thing to see.
Where is everyone from? I live in DC. (Did I already say that?) :)
Thank goodness for online forums like these so we can all connect!
Hi Jackie - I like my theory, but it is the only theory I know of, and honestly I didn't realize there were many others out there. I should look into others so that I can give you a better assessment of my theory.
I really like doing the classes online. It's nice to go to school in your pajamas!! But I do think that a classroom setting would definitely be beneficial. I'd like to see others do it and be critiqued on a regular basis. Sometimes you feel all alone in class because you don't have interaction with others. It does require a lot of discipline to do classes online, but there is so much time (and money!!) invested into this for me that to slack off would be such a waste.
So glad to hear that you like it! I have seen some of the briefing methods that Mark K. uses and it does make a lot of sense, which is nice. That is a good idea, too, about using a metronome with the top 1000 words. Today my husband is working (yuck, on a Saturday), so I am going to have an extra couple of hours to practice and am going to work on my tapes and my briefs/phrasing. I turned in a 200 JC test from class Thursday and am anxiously awaiting my results from my teacher!
Good to have you here, Kate! I'm not very familiar with your theory. Do you like it? I was taught StenEd, which I sort of have a love/hate relationship with most of the time. :) It is logical in a lot of ways and not at the same time, and is fairly stroke-intensive. I've heard good things about Alfred, too. How do you like doing it online?
Hey everyone!!!! I'm new here. Just joined this week. I am in Buffalo, NY and in my 3rd semester of a 5 semester program. Just started Speed Building 1 and am currently at about 100wpm. I attend classed online through Alfred state college in NY. We use the Realwrite/Realtime theory and Case Catalyst software.
It is hard for me to incorporate new briefs into my writing. When I'm testing, I just write whatever comes at me at that moment - usually I end up writing most things out. At home I try really hard to incorporate the briefs, but right now I've been trying to break my hand speed and just get whatever I can down, so the briefs haven't really been coming for me. I need to start practicing like Virginia mentioned - that sounds like a great way to learn briefs!
As far as practicing, when I first got out of theory I liked practicing for accuracy because at that time I was flying in speed and didn't have to work very hard at it at first. The accuracy to me was much more important than getting the speed to come. When I was working on my 180 tests I started practicing way above my goal speed, trying to get my hands moving quicker, and that is really helping. I practice to my tapes and some drills I have downloaded on my computer and sometimes to the TV as well.
Virginia, how do you like StenoMaster? I've heard great things about it. Did you learn that from the beginning? I love my 8000LX! It is a light purple color! :)
Angela, thanks! Glad to hear your program is going well, too. I've heard a lot of good things about Simply Steno. What software are you on? I am on Eclipse, and when you are working on money, Eclipse will do the formatting work for you. For example, if you need to stroke "$158.96 per item" I would stroke it like this: 158 / DL-RS / 9 / 6 / PER / TEM. By throwing that DL-RS stroke in there, Eclipse knows to put the dollar sign in front of the number I just wrote, and then also will format the cents correctly once you hit the stroke following it (in my example, "per"). For the longest time I would hit the numbers, DL-RS, more numbers, and the my cents stroke! It is so much easier now.
Hey all! Where is everyone from? What speed are you at? How long have you been in school? Part-time/full-time? We can liven it up more in here!
I am originally from the Chicago area, but have lived in DC for 3 years. I am DONE with Lit (thank goodness!), and am working on my 200 Q&A and Jury Charges. I expect to pass them within the next couple of weeks, as I have been turning in 92/93%! It is exciting! I've been in school since September '07 and am part-time.
Looking forward to getting to know you all better!
yup, I did all of that and called stenograph. They said I have to order one from them. So I am going to see if my mom or dad will order it. No practice for me until I get another one!! :-(
