Welcome to CSR Nation
I assume this happens more than any of us want to know. I have been taking multiple depositions over the last few months in one case involving multiple defense attorneys. I was asked today by one of the defense attorneys to compromise my invoices to her because - I find out - the group of defense attorneys (whoever gets the complimentary copy of that witness) has been scanning in that transcript and passing it around to…

Hey,
It's been a while. Don't know if anyone is listening or reading. But here's a thought. Instead of my annual rant and rave about the tax man coming, how about I tell you how I keep track of stuff so that when I have to go into the tax man (or THE MAN) as I'll be calling him from here on out (as in don't let the man get you down). Anyhoo, I digress.
So you've got your Depobook. You have your shoebox full of receipts. You've got your mileage written…

Free Wi-Fi, gotta love it. I use it all the time for work. I use it when I get a call from an agency or attorney while I'm out on a job, I didn't get that file, can you re-send it. I use it when I've decided to work remotely, i.e., not from home.
The important word here is "free." I am outraged that the cell phone companies want you to pay $60/month so that you can buy one of those wi-fi cards. Don't do it, I say. There are plenty of places you can get wi-fi for free.…

When I first started reporting many, many moons ago, it was just myself and my writer. As time went by, my writer was joined with a hookup to my own personal computer and then to many computers for Realtime and now hooking up via Skype and WebEx, along with hookups and teleconferencing. The job of a reporter is a dynamic one, but what about the renumeration? Recently, in NYC and from what I have read online, many agencies are bundling the…

So...it's been just over a year since I became a CSR. I had a pretty good year. I started out slow, got a second car, and started making some moves. As soon as I started getting a foothold in an agency, the calendar person who I loved working with resigned. Now I have started fresh with a new calendar person and I can barely get on calendar at all. Tonight I find myself researching firms in L.A. to start out looking for a new agency to call home. And I know this is not exactly the best time…

Does anybody have information as to a good insurance company that I can insure my machine through? I received a letter from my leasing company regarding insuring my equipment. However, that company only insures the equipment until the end of my lease, which is in May. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Okay, court reporting community, I need some suggestions. It's that time of the year again.
As several of my reporters have been with me for a while, I'm beginning to ponder what to get them. We have a good relationship, but I don't know them like you know the neighbor or your friends. I would assume, like many occupations, you don't need another court reporter-related gift.
In the past I've done things like researched their hometown and sent gift…

I just joined the cover depos group in the New York area. How does it work? Will I be notified when a job needs coverage, or do I have to check the group myself periodically?
Hopefully it's worth the $50 yearly fee. Trying everything at this point since work has been unbelievably slow since Hurricane Sandy hit in New York.

I'm a small agency in NJ and I'm contemplating using the Real Legal program so that my reporters can send in an ASCII file and I can print and send out for them. This seems to be the wave of the future! Does anyone have any opinions on the program? Thanks for your help!

Hi Everybody,
I am a student in the 160-180 speed--woohoo!! I am so happy to be nearing the end of my school career and looking forward to getting out in to the real world. I'm wondering if anybody out there can tell me what the freelance field is like in the Sacrmento area right now? Is it feast or famine? Somewhere in between?
Also, I am still using my Protege student writer. I am planning on keeping it as a back-up but not sure what type of writer to…

Hello Everyone,
I went to court reporting school and got my certificate back in 2007. At the time, I was working in an office and continued there eventually becoming the office manager. The money was good so I stayed with the company and did not pursue the court reporting field. After 5 years I am no longer with the company and I find myself wanting to scope. That was the part that I loved the most; getting the transcript completely ready for delivery. According to several court…

Hi, everyone. I have a friend that is considering purchasing the Light Speed by Stenovations. She has some general questions, and because we all know how daunting the task of purchasing a steno machine can be, I'm hoping to get some good, general feedback.

I took an all-day depo and after the deposition, the attorney asked for a "rough draft". So after going home and working on it all night, I sent him a "rough draft." The next day he asks me to read from the "rough draft" certain sections into the record, which I complied. The opposing counsel objected, of course, and made a comment that now an uncertified transcript is "in the record." I don't usually add what I read into the record word for word. I always put in a parenthetical. …

Does anyone know if stenocat32 and digitalcat are compatible? If not, is there some type of conversion?

I was hoping to get some feedback from reporters who have done trial work in court and have provided realtime through Livenote to the judge, but also was able to provide realtime to the attorneys through Caseview Net using Case Catalyst software. Is this even possible to do? I know reporters have provided RT for both the judge and counsel simultaneously, but I'm not sure it's possible using the two different software…

Good morning. Does anyone know what I need to do to pair an Apple wireless keyboard to my PC? I am currently using XP but will also be purchasing a new laptop with Windows 7 that will also need to be paired.
