CaseCatalyst Won!

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. I did make a decision...at first I was really impressed by Eclipse, not so much when I viewed Case. But I think I wasn't as impressed with Case because I had already seen all the bells and whistles with Eclipse. Knowing that Stenograph will probably be the last one standing in our industry, that Eclipse and Case will always push each other to improve, I figured I couldn't go wrong either way. I chose Case. Also what influenced my decision was… Continue

Concerned Reporters website article "Putting the association on the rocks?"

There have been many posts regarding NCRA's proposal to test of electronic reporters.

One of the very best articles expressing the best interests of NCRA members is contained at the Concerned Reporters website in the article entitled "Putting the association on the rocks?"

To view the article, go to http://www.concernedreporters.blogspot.com/

As a part of my always standing up for the very best interests of NCRA members and in having personally confronted the… Continue

CRID vs. CCR???

I have been going to The Court Reporting Institute of Dallas (CRID) online since July of 2007. I am currently only at 100wpm and am starting to feel burnt out and like I need more structure and more to rely on than solely self-discipline. I recently checked out The College of Court Reporting (CCR) in Hobart, IN. They were the first school to get an online program, so they've been doing it for a little longer than CRID and from what I've seen on the website, have more structure and organization.… Continue

Doctor Depos - first year out

First a few things that are obvious but can be overlooked.

Doctor depos can be amazingly, mind-bogglingly difficult or really, really easy. It's the luck of the draw. If you get an easy one, figure the page rate is going to balance with the days the doctor has an accent so thick he might as well be speaking Klingon and no amount of money is going to compensate you.

That being said EVERYONE can take a doctor's depo. EVERYONE. Of course, the caveat is if the questioning… Continue

Tomorrow my baby is five

Tomorrow my baby is five. She is not a baby anymore. She's a little girl. We're having a birthday party for her, and I know she's looking forward to it.

I, on the other hand, am a little bittersweet. My baby is growing up. She still says that she wants to live with me forever. I'll remind her when she tries to go away for college. Better yet, I'll videotape her saying it.

But really, if you've seen my pics of my daughter. She's lost her baby chubs. She's a little girl,… Continue

"BRIEF IT" I like it.

Hey, Everybody,

I just recently got updated to 10.3 on Case CATalyst. One of the new features is "Brief it." I used it today and I really think I'm going to like it. The software watches what's going on in the transcript and comes up w/ some one-stroke briefs for you as you are writing along. Some of them are kind of whacky but I chose to use a couple of them and it really helped me out. I found out my hands really held up a lot better b/c I was able to use one strokes for certain… Continue

First year out - interpreted depositions

This could potentially be the easiest deposition that will leave you with a headache.

Call from the agency.

Agency: We've got you on a really easy interpreted depo.

Me: Okay.

Let's break that down. So many things to consider here. Interpreted depos can be easy, really easy. But they can also be really, really difficult. It depends somewhat on the language being interpreted.

Let's break that down.

Spanish - the deposition will be most… Continue

Hey Guys!!!

I haven't been on in forever, but I'm back! Well, maybe for a little while at least ...

I've been very busy working on transcripts and being in court, and YES, I've been practicing. I'm just taking the skills section of the RMR, so we'll see how it goes in May! Will any and everyone who was following my RMR blog update me on what's been going on with you and yours? Either on this blog or the other one or through personal message would be cool. I'd like that :) Byeeeee!

CURIOUS CSR RE-ENTERING FIELD

After a five-year break, am re-entering the field of reporting and will be freelancing in Northern Cal (hopefully, if there's work). I hear things have really slowed down and gone are the days of being as busy as you want to be. Would greatly appreciate any feedback as far as whether or not things are picking up, reporters' opinions on the cause of the slow-down (the economy?), if you see a light at the end of the tunnel, and any other feedback you are willing to share. Thanks!

finger movements and the * key

Hi, all:) I just have been on a blog craze lately, I guess.

I have mentioned in earlier blogs that I am not at all familiar with using the * key for anything other than deletion. Therefore, trying to work Mark's theory into mine, I don't understand how you are supposed to make some of the reaches. For an example:

before he didn't = BR*ERMS --> you're pointer fingers are already on letters (the R- and the -R), so how are you supposed to reach over and hit the * too? What… Continue

Help me pass unfamiliar tests!

Here is my story: I am a night student at South Coast College in Orange. I work full-time (graveyard shift), and I am a single mom. I sleep during the day, wake up and go to school and then straight to work four days a week. I practice as often as I can, which really isn't that much. I type on my break at work for an hour (at 4 in the morning), and I try to get to school early when I can. I have been in school a little over two years, and I know I am moving at a desirable pace. I am currently… Continue

I sometimes despair for the next generation

I got a call at 5 mins of 12:00 today, asking if I could cover a 1:00. The reporter ended up going longer than she expected in the AM job. Got there, and the other atty didn't put it on his calendar and forgot all about it.

So I left and went to the parking lot that's next to the building, and the little attendant tells me $6. I said, "For half an hour?" She says, "You got here at 11:50. It's 1:40 now." I'm staring at her like she's nuts. "You just saw me! I just got… Continue

Caveat emptor

There are thousands of great agencies out there. There are thousands of great reporters out there. And this is a wonderful site for these two groups of people to find each other. Who knows, it might be a match made in heaven.

But (you knew there would be one) there are agencies and reporters out there who aren't quite what they seem to be.

What can you do?

Well, of course, you can post on here and ask for referrals. Hopefully, people will send you an e-mail or… Continue
